digging to the rhythm and the echo of a solitary siren

Summary: Riku's hanging around to wait until Darkness. He runs into an old face.

[It had been weeks since Ritsuka's death. Riku had coped the only way he knew how: he clamped up, withdrew, and kept going with his life. For two years, he'd pushed himself to help his friends and keep the peace so they could have a good life. Things balanced out. He tried to ignore the politics and focus on his job and his duty, always looking after those who mattered while keeping his eyes on the enemy. The enemy, however, turned out not to be the Organization.

Ritsuka had died because he was pushed into a patch of Darkness by bullies at school. He had died because no one had been there to stop them from hurting him, even when he fought back. Ritsuka had never been weak, no, but he still could have used help. Riku should have been there. But because he'd assumed Ritsuka would be safe, he didn't offer to give him a ride. And because he didn't think the kids would be a problem anymore, he didn't think twice.

He'd been foolish.

It was wrong of him to be complacent. He always thought the worst that could happen would be to lose Sora or Kairi again, or to lose a friend to the darkness of their heart. But now, he'd probably never see Ritsuka again. The Core hadn't revived him.

Since then, Riku stopped pushing long hours at work. Instead, he trained. He pushed himself, went out into the Darkness and worked himself until he could barely lift his blade any longer. Tonight would be the same.

He sits on a picnic table outside of one of the restaurants, the shop having closed just minutes before. He stares into nothing, lost in thought and guilt, and goes through training rituals in his mind. He plays out small battles like a strategist, back and forth, winning and losing. He plans. That's all he can do until he finally puts thought to action.]
