He sought her out every day.

Most days he didn't find her. Although Ashitaka's tracking skills were sound, developed from a lifetime of helping to hunt for his village, San was clever and fast . . . and this was nowhere near a forest. This jungle of steel and warm bodies and exhaust . . . it was easy to get lost in it and leave none of the same tracks.

Still, from time to time he did find where she'd slept. He left things -- small things -- in the hopes she would find them. Food. A container of water for the times in the Darkness. Some kind of amulet that would reportedly seal off an entrance and make it Darkness-proof.

This time, a blanket. The nights were increasingly cold. He tucked it more securely under his arm as he moved, wading through trees and underbrush. He'd lost her trail for the third time in an hour. Frowning, he bent to check on the same broken twig he'd already seen twice.
