She does come across as a little awkward, but more than anything Warsman is sympathetic; it can't be an easy job even at the best of times, and he can't imagine Hattie is a particularly forgiving mistress. She doesn't look quite so young as she could, but her obvious nerves are enough that he can't quite stop himself from using the kid-skin gloves approach just in case he's intimidated her by appearance alone.
