When Eponine heard Hattie's voice, she looked up curiously. Was Hattie really apologising to her? Really?
She's stunned.
Eponine had never pegged Hattie as the type to apologise. She crawls across to the door, and sits with her ear pressed to it whilst Hattie speaks. She snorts a little when Hattie mentions her temper. Eponine completely agrees.
And for a moment, after Hattie finishes, Eponine's quiet, thinking.
"Asleep... no." She sighs and stands up and opens the bedroom door. She gestures Hattie inside before turning to face her.
"I don't care if you think I'm a whore, Madame. I know I am. It ain't nice, but it is what it is. And it keeps me alive. I don't care if you call me a thief or you hit me or - I do not care, Madame. But I will not be pitied. I don't need your pity. I don't need anybody's pity. I can look after myself."
She straightens her dress, smoothing it over her hips. "I lied about M'sieur Byakuuya. He did not like me much, either. He fired me before he disappeared."
