Who:Rachel Berry and Finn Hudson
When: 2/1
Where: Finn's place
Summary: A date.
Warnings: ~romance

Since she'd first wound up coming to Canada, Rachel hadn't thought too much about what she was going to do with or without a boyfriend or anything like that. The things that seemed the most important to her were the things that had always been her constants-- writing and singing and practicing for hours until her chest ached and her arms and legs were shaking from all of the extra work. In fact, part of her believed (and would, regardless of what anyone else said to her) that being there was something of a gift-- a chance to do all of this practicing without having to pay the price of time-- she could do it all and not have it take away from anything she was doing back home.

Of course she wasn't sure how it was going to work when she got home-- how much of this place, if any, she would remember. It just helped her to think that she was right and that there was some kind of purpose to being here at all.

Unfortunately- or fortunately- a Finn sized wrench had been thrown into the mix here, and it hadn't mattered how much time there had been since the last time she'd seen him, it felt like all of those feelings had come rushing back; all of the time they'd spent together and all of that time that he'd spent away from her, too. When she'd thought that she had it all worked out, at least in her mind, Finn had gone and told her that he loved her.

It had been kind of perfect, actually. She didn't have a single complaint about that (and it was unusual, since she usually did have something to complain about in every situation) or how it had made her feel (like a million dollars, really). It was exactly what she'd always thought of when she thought of her great teenaged love.

Actually, that was how she found herself standing outside of Finn's place, her hair styled carefully and wearing the nicest thing she owned-- she'd even put on her lip gloss for this, because Finn said that they were going to be having a date. A dinner date, even. He was going to cook and she was just going to... show up. Had shown up, actually, as she knocked on the door and waited for him.

It was a little bit of a twist on Breadsticks and her bedroom, but she definitely mind that at all. This was more romantic and much more grown-up, and... it was perfect. Very mature and it echoed how she felt in this place.

Finn just didn't want to be thinking sex if that wasn't what Rachel wanted. It would keep him from assuming things, and perhaps trying things that would only end in one of Rachel's famous storm outs or something. And he didn't exactly put it past her to storm out in the middle of the night. He could picture it perfectly, actually. He'd end up putting his hand somewhere that she didn't want it and she'd get up and turn the lights on (what good was storming out if no one saw it?), give him some speech where she pointed out everything he was doing wrong, then she'd storm out of his room and keep it up until she got back to her room, in Kurt's apartment. He'd probably end up calling her to apologize (since there was no way he'd get the chance before her big exit) then the next time he saw her, there'd probably be some big talk about boundaries. Sometimes it was just like dating Quinn, only with less praying. Not that he was dumb enough to say that to Rachel or anything.

"I mean, I know you have Kurt and Blaine and everything, and I know they wouldn't let anything happen to you but I'd just feel better if you were here with me, you know? Sure, the building is darkness proofed or whatever they call it but--" He let his words trail off and he shrugged, clearing off about half of his plate before he even looked at Rachel again.

And then it was back to pushing his food back and forth across his plate. But then he dropped his fork and got up to go to the cupboard, grabbing two glasses. "I know that it's never been a problem for you or anything, but I don't want you to do anything that you don't want to, okay?"

And along the same line, Finn often wondered how he got along with most of the people he was friends with. Glee club kind of seemed like the only thing he had in common with a lot of them. Especially Kurt and Rachel. He liked classic rock to their show tunes, and musicals usually made him fall asleep. He tried to stay awake for them, because he knew how much Rachel enjoyed them but they were just kind of... boring? Sure, he liked singing and all, but did they really have to sing about everything? Oh look, the sun is shining! Let's sing about it. Oh look, I got a paper cut! Let's sing about it. Oh look, I'm brushing my hair! I should probably sing about it. Finn didn't really get it. But apparently both Kurt and Rachel did. He always felt so out of place when they started talking about that stuff.

Imagine how stupid and disappointed he felt when he found out that Wicked wasn't a Star Wars musical. That's something he might have actually stayed awake for.

He may not always come to her rescue where words were involved, he may let her fight her own battles too often and side with the wrong people (often coming to her aid when they were alone), but he would protect her from what he could. Whether they were together or not, she would always have Finn to protect her.

"I just mean, like, inviting you to stay with me tonight isn't some kinda way to pressure you into anything, you know?" He paused long enough to look through the fridge. He settled on just filling both glasses with water, though, before returning to the table with both and sitting back down. "Like I said, I know you don't do anything you don't want to because you're really strong willed or whatever, and I think that's really awesome about you, but I just wanted you to know, I guess."

Finn would be lying if he said that he didn't want the same things other guys wanted, but being barely more experienced than his girlfriend is probably what helped him to keep his wants to himself. It was easy to keep from pressuring Rachel too much if he was just as nervous as she was, maybe even more. She didn't really seem to get nervous about anything, after all. Hell, that time with Santana might as well have not even happened. It didn't really mean anything to him. If it made him feel different in any way, it just made him feel worse about himself. It was times like that when he wished that he had just half the strength that Rachel had. Of course, finding out that Jesse and Rachel had made similar plans hadn't really helped him any, either.

"You're more special than anyone I know, Rachel, and that's part of the reason why I love you so much. And you're really smart and you know what you want and you don't let anyone push you to do anything and I love that about you."

But he still had to wonder just what she did want.

Finn gave Rachel a half-hearted smile as she spoke, laying his hands on her shoulders. She really was the most important person in Canada, in his whole world. Well, aside from his mom. She would always be number one to him but he was sure that Rachel understood that. She was important to him in other ways, in the 'I wanna spend the rest of my life with this girl' kind of ways.

He just didn't believe what she was saying. He wasn't really that smart (he was barely passing enough classes to keep him on the football team), he'd never be special in the way that Rachel was and as far as important went? That was open to interpretation.

Closing his eyes when her lips touched his, Finn couldn't help the smile. A real smile this time. "I love you, Rachel." There was no one else for him. It may have taken him a little longer than it should have for him to realize that, but she was. He leaned down to press his lips to hers, continuing the kiss that he felt she ended just a little too soon.

Finn never really saw those things as special. They were just, well, things that he did. With his mom, he was just being a good son and the man of the house that they didn't really have without his dad around. Besides, he saw how much the whole Darren thing had hurt her and he just didn't want to see her in that kind of pain again. As for the Kurt thing, well, it took Burt more of less pointing out Finn's shortcomings as a brother to make him realize that Kurt was, in fact, family (or at least he was going to be, at the time) and that Finn should start acting like he was. If he'd actually taken the time to so much as notice what was going on, it might never have gotten to the point of Kurt going to Dalton in the first place. Maybe he could have put a top to it or something. At the very least, he could have tried.

Either way, those things didn't make him feel special. If anything did, it was being with Rachel. That she was letting him love her was what made him feel special. Even just being in her life made him feel special.

Finn ended the kiss with a smile, resting his forehead against hers. He hadn't really thought about the whole powers thing in terms of, well, him. Not that it mattered. If it happened, it happened. It didn't really seem like there was too much he could do about it. He's just have to cross that bridge when he got to it. "Maybe we should finish our dinner or something. It's kinda getting cold now."

Finn wouldn't believe that something like that would be Rachel's power. Rachel's already too much like that, unless that's just how the whole thing went. Then again, with Santana, her power was attached to her emotions and Santana was pretty emotional, even if it was usually just anger. It kinda made sense, though. He might be angry too if he had to hide a big part of himself like she seemed to think she needed to.

Moving his chair so it was closer to Rachel, Finn sat back down, pulling his plate and the glass of water in front of himself. He picked up his fork and started to eat again as he thought about her question. The food wasn't nearly as good now that it was cold, so he stopped eating and instead settled for tapping his fork against the edge of his plate. Maybe he'd invest in a drum set once he actually managed to get a job...

"I don't think so. Or maybe it's just something that isn't really noticeable or... something."

Personally, Finn thought it would be nice if he found out that this place didn't end up making him any more different than he was supposed to be. He was that stereotypical jock who just happened to enjoy singing and dancing. Wasn't that different enough? Even here, in a strange place like Siren's Port, it seemed to make him different (at least that was how he took the reactions to his admission to some that he could, in fact, sing. And that he enjoyed it). "I don't know. Maybe. I'm not really sure how this whole thing works yet. I'm not even sure I'd believe any of it, if I didn't actually see what Santana can do, and everything."
