Lunching with a friend

Who: Byakuya Kuchiki and Ella of Frell

Where: Sector 6 Cafe
Summary: Byakuya is aliiiiiiiiiiiive and he's asked Ella to lunch.
Warnings: Food fights. Totally. Only not.


Though she's been keeping busy and being worried about her friends, when she got the message from Byakuya to meet for lunch, she accepted. Naturally, she avoided telling Hattie about it because she knew Hattie would interpret it as a date and find a way to go in Ella's place. Ew.

In either case, by the appointed time, she made her way to the cafe to meet with the shinigami.

Byakuya wanted to smirk. Instead, he sipped his tea and looked at Ella. He wondered if she'd understand his humor yet.

"I should pay a visit." Because he loved trolling Hattie.

However, if Ella said not to, he would respect her wishes. He may not like her sister, but he did like her, and wished not to aggravate her too severely.

That... was not what she expected to hear. SO instead Byakuya got a puzzled look out of her. "You want to pay a visit. To Hattie." She said slowly, not quite sure she understood.

"Why?" Seriously, this she can not comprehend. Of course if Hattie were to find out Ella said something like that, she'd never hear the end of it. "I thought you disliked her." Putting it mildly.

Byakuya ticked up an eyebrow. He wondered if Ella would ever get his sense of humor. However, since she wasn't, and it wasn't harming anything, he decided to keep going. Why not? She wouldn't be too angry with him.

"It would be impolite to not announce myself to my old acquaintances would it not?" Really, he just wanted to annoy Hattie. Maybe he'd wait until Hitsugaya was better and the pair of them could do something.

Too bad there would be no hanabi here.

Snort. Er, only without the actual noise, but Ella huffs a bit all the same, suspicious. "You've had no care to associate with her before, acquaintance or not. Why the change of heart? - and don't tell me it's because of manners." Not buying that. Not after the argument they had before about her stepsister.

"One should not forgo manners, no matter the personal opinion of someone." Another amused tick of the eyebrow. Ella was so easy to tease sometimes. And really, that was all he was doing.

Food was brought over and placed on the table. The waitress bowed deeply asking if there was anything else she could bring and Byakuya dismissed her with a twitch of an eyebrow.

Yeah, he was that kind of nobleman.

And Byakuya gets the LONGEST. STARE. EVER.

She senses shenanigans. SHENANIGANS, BYAKUYA. In fact, she didn't even say anything to the way he dismissed the waitress. When the woman slinked away, Ella suddenly laughed, a hand in front of her mouth.

"Oh, okay Byakuya, you had me going there for a while." It was a joke, right? There is no way he was seriously wanting to go and see Hattie.

He did it, just to see her smile. He thought she needed more levity in her life.

"Going? We just arrived." Now, he's being obvious because he enjoys joking with her, and because she's one of the few to get his sense of humor.

Pff. "Of course we did." Ella shook her head a bit, glancing down at the table. "Now... what did you just order here? I'm afraid I wasn't paying attention."

She'd been too concerned that he'd taken leave of his senses. Or worse.

Byakuya looked down. He hadn't, actually, ordered. They'd just brought him food. "Several types of sushi, sashimi and a few other things." He took a moment to try to think of the word. "It is a 'sampler'." At least he thought that was what it was called.

He ticked up an eyebrow. "Be cautious of the green sauce, it is hot." Now he liked it, but he wasn't sure Ella did.

"Oh I know," Ella answered absently, eyeing the sampler. "Hattie loves this stuff." She gave Ella that green sauce herself once, and had one heck of a laugh when Ella tried a bit of it.

Not fun. But Ella probably would have done the same were the roles reversed. "Saying this green sauce -- wasabi, is it? -- is hot, is quite an understatement."

"Wasabi yes. A favorite of mine." He loved the stuff. Knowing Hattie enjoyed it didn't dampen it either. He'd been eating the stuff for over a century. She wouldn't take that from him.

"You don't enjoy the spice?" You've seen him with his spare wasabi and hot sauce Ella. He tried to eat stuff that other people won't because it's too hot. He usually succeeded.

Ella shook her head with a mild smile, "Not even a little, I'm afraid." Pause. "Well that's not -entirely- true - my food would be rather bland if I didn't like any spice. The spices you partake in - the wasabi and that hot sauce stuff, I can't bear that." Sheepish - she had a very low tolerance for hot food. Hattie didn't. Their tastes ran as differently as their personalities.

Byakuya took a piece of sashimi between his chopsticks and ate for a moment. "My mother taught me to enjoy the spices. She often ate things that were far too hot for a child to eat." He still ate them. He'd just often regretted it.

"My father enjoyed sweeter things." His father had a sweet tooth. And had tried to make him have one. It had backfired horribly.

"I prefer to stay in the middle area, as far as taste goes. A little bland and boring maybe, but sweets the like you have in this era are a luxury back home for a lot of people." Ella mused absently. "I always thought that was a little unfair; but the village held a bazaar every few months to allow a lot of people to try thins they aren't often exposed to. Like chocolate."

That confused Byakuya. "You were nobility." That meant she didn't have to go without, unless she was so poor that they had to.

Which didn't make any sense. He'd seen poor nobility like that, and they always had coarser manners than the truly genteel. He never went without and his people were well taken care of. The clan took care of its own.

He tried not to think of Kouga. That had been an aberration. That had been handled.

Ella frowned a bit. Granted, her father wound up screwing up their finances and had to let a lot of people go, and sell a lot of their things, but even when they had money they didn't indulge in silly things like chocolate.

"It doesn't matter if I'm nobility or not. Chocolate isn't a necessity, and we didn't use our status for frivolous things like that." Really it irked her when she saw the nobles at home who squandered their money on expensive things just for bragging rights, or to show people less well off that they could afford it - instead of using it to help people.

Byakuya ticked up an eyebrow. "It is one advantage of the nobility to be able to have a bit of frivolity while caring for those under them." The other advantage being able to get what you wanted done, until another noble - who happened to be a more powerful taichou - took exception.

He probably shouldn't be so bitter over that, but Ukitake-taichou had surprised him and he still wasn't used to that.

"We have different priorities back home - and here." Ella mused idly. At least for her kind of nobility - admittedly a dying breed back home.

She honestly didn't care about those kinds of luxuries, and rarely even indulged in them, back home or in this place. "Chocolate isn't one of them. When I think about it, the only time we really indulged in things like that is during social functions."

"Priorities are often the same." He disagreed with her. "Caring for your family, attending to duty, all of those things are the same, no matter where your home is."

At least, they were supposed to be. That was the way nobility was supposed to work. and would work, once he spoke to several others amongst the newcomers that he felt he could trust.

Ella shook her head mildly. He could disagree with her all he liked - it was his opinion after all.

"That's your opinion - sadly, not everyone thinks that way, Byakuya." It might be nice, but being that they were literally from different worlds, and different times. Yeah, no, doesn't work the same.
