Who: Joker + Open
When: Night of the 20th
Where: City-wide
Summary: The Joker is dead but not gone. He returns in the Darkness to destroy the island he feels has taken so much from him.
Warnings: Violence, possible character death, language
The war path started in sector five where a man had died, feeling alone and bitter. The massive creature bore the man's madness, anger, pain and despair and knew only one thing: Destruction. It thundered down the streets, its long tail lashing about behind it, its hideous, cackling cries echoing to the rooftops. Where it went it disturbed the other beasts and all over the island the Darkness was starting to act up and grow more violent.
The creature took no notice of the madness it produced. It had only one aim: The Core. It was making its way towards Sector Four to destroy the machine once and for all. For Batman's sake. Even in the Darkness, it was all still about Batman.
((OOC: OOC info on the event!. Threading format is "Tagger's Choice": Tag however you feel most comfortable. And feel free to NPC the monsters and civilians as you wish! People fighting Joker will be fighting him at the same time, so go ahead and tag each other. Also, if you'd like to play with one of the optional Core status ailments: Getting closer to the baseball diamond may make you feel queasy or uneasy as if the Pull has become a Push.))

He quickly began running toward the center of the island - his path around the city had just been spiraling outward, so he was nowhere near the apartment. Right through the middle was the fastest way to get home. But that was helping him run faster, especially as he started seeing things forming in the shadows. Mentally, he reminded himself to berate himself for his stupidity later. It was when he really started having to dodge creatures coming toward him that he tried ducking through the maze of alleyways in the middle of the island - the downside was less space for him, but that meant less space for the monsters, meaning less monsters to fight.
Jake continued through the alleys, dodging what he could, shooting what he couldn't, taking all the training from the police force here to do it. He was going directly by the book, which wasn't exactly the best idea, but for a man with no powers he could practically apply to fighting, and only about 50 bullets left on him? He didn't exactly have the opportunity to take chances.

She ran by one of the alleyways, something catching her eye. She whipped around, ready to strike--
"...Jake?"
If she hadn't hesitated, she could have stabbed him or done some real, permanent damage. She frowned. "Jake, are you okay?"

"... Jake?"
He realized just what - or rather, who - was in front of him, and he immediately lowered his gun, letting out a little sigh of relief. "Jesus christ, y'almost made me drop dead in my boots." He seemed thankful to see her, even if the realization she was out in the Darkness dawned on him a few moments later. "The hell you doin' out here?" He turned to quickly look around them, see if anything of immediate danger was coming toward them - but thankfully there was nothing except the normal, zombie-like monsters, which were slow and stupid, and easy enough to avoid. He seemed to have lost the big ones in the labyrinth of alleys.
It was only then that he turned his attention back to Re-l, giving her a nod and the smallest hint of a grateful smile. "I'm doin' just fine, miss Re-l. Little bruised, maybe, but nothin' a shot'a whiskey won't cure."

"I'm usually out here," she admitted, stepping away from the mouth of the alleyway so he could join her, though she kept her eye out for any other monsters that might sneak up on them. "I could ask you the same question, though."
There were more growls closing in and she frowned, turning back to him. "But not now. We have to keep moving. Where are you headed?" If he was going to go home, she'd accompany him.

"Usually? You serious?" Well, he'd known Re-l was, to put it in three words or less, a complete badass. But Jake hadn't expected to hear she came out into the Darkness that often. Though she hadn't been terribly hurt by it yet, to his knowledge, so as long as she knew what she was doing, he wasn't going to press the issue.
"Ain't like I meant to get stuck out here after dark. I was lookin' fer Violet, and I guess I just lost track of time." He sheepishly admitted this fact, looking away again so that he could gauge where the danger was most significant. It seemed like they had a group coming at them right now, and he nodded at Re-l's suggestion.
"Yer right, let's high-tail it outta here. Headin' b'tween sectors two and four, Diego's and my place." He shifted his gun into ready position again, so he could pop his arm up and fire if needed. "You gonna be all right out here, on yer own? Though I reckon you've been out here a lot more'n I have."
After another cursory check, he took the initiative to start running again, not firing at anything yet - he hadn't seen any big bads hiding in the alleys yet. Though once they got to the main streets... that wasn't so sure what would happen.

"Yes, I'm serious," she said. "But that's not the issue. We need to get out of here, and quickly."
She knew how to get to Diego's home from here. She cursed herself for not bringing her motorcycle; they'd be able to make it in double time. She turned and gestured for him to follow her as she checked the streets closest to them. "I'll be all right, honest. I have a healing ability, remember?" Re-l turned back to him and tried to give him a reassuring smile, grim as it may be. "I won't die."
Not until she figured out who caused this and put a stop to them.
