When: June 19, late afternoon
Where: Sector 5
Summary: Thanks to a pair of shoplifters, Wanda and Hitsugaya meet for the first time and have to battle a magically-enhanced fire ooze.
Warnings: Violence and language.
Pilfered prize in one hand, Colin used his other to grab hold of Janelle, and together they ran. It wasn’t long before his lungs were burning, his legs painfully strained, but he didn’t stop. In contrast, Janelle was keeping up with ease, not at all winded, despite laughing almost nonstop.
Eventually, Colin released Janelle, while simultaneously tightening his grip on the smoky crystal he’d lifted from the Magical Mushroom, a magic supply shop in Sector 5. It felt strangely cool in his palm and a slight tingle ran up his arm. But there wasn’t time to think about that shit because they were still not in the clear.
The shop’s owner, Asher Haight, was a bullshit New Age hippie and had been easy as fuck to outwit, especially with eye candy like Janelle around to distract him. It was actually her idea to steal the crystal in the first place. She liked it, so she had to have it. And that reason had been good enough for Colin. Of course, given Janelle’s ability to mentally push him into acting, it was more than likely he’d received a little nudge in the right direction. Not that he cared. Keeping her happy meant she’d make him ‘happy’ when they got back to his parent’s house. Win-Win.
This wasn’t the first time the pair had brazenly shoplifted an expensive bit of merchandise from an affiliated store. It was a dangerous thing to do; AGI or SERO, those fuckers didn’t mess around. They’d decided to risk it once again today because, thanks to the wonky shit going on with the Darkness, the streets were practically deserted, which meant no company goons or good Samaritans.
Colin risked a glance behind. Fuck! That uptight shop assistant was still on their tail! Dumb bitch didn’t know when to give up. One crystal wasn’t worth pursuing them for blocks, risking God knows what danger. Fucking do-gooders, man!
He gave Janelle the signal to cut across the street, intending to duck down an alley and lose their pursuer. They were halfway across before he swung his head back around to look where they were going. When Colin he did, he had to dodge fast to avoid slamming into some stupid son of a bitch who was standing in the middle of the goddamn road with his back to him. As it was, they knocked shoulders, which caused Colin to stumble.
“Watch it, you fucking ass—”
Without warning, Colin found himself out of the frying pan and into the fire—almost literally. While he had basically managed to avoid colliding with the white-haired freak in the road, he instead found himself standing knee-deep in what the stranger had been facing: a giant blob of living fire ooze.
“Aaaaaaaah! Holy fuck, my leg!”
The smell of burnt flesh hit the air, and Colin yanked his leg out of the ooze, hobbling as far as he could before falling over. Thankfully, he had the presence of mind to use his gift to erect a body-tight force field, which would hopefully protect him from further injury.
Janelle was by his side in an instant, on her knees screaming blindly for someone to help him.
In the meantime, the smoky quartz—which had been dropped and already long forgotten by the pair—was quietly enveloped by the fire ooze, which promptly started to shimmer.

And she would. But that didn’t mean she actually believed him. There was no way she’d just take his word on something like that. But for now she could use some help, and those two idiot teens certainly weren’t going to be of any use.
When the ooze started firing, Wanda would have deflected the bolts had her new ‘comrade’ not provided a convenient shield. Score one for the not-a-kid.
Thankfully, there was a lull in the shooting when the ooze drew itself up in an almost indignant fashion, as though the crystal was taken aback by how easily its power had been negated.
“You.” Wanda pointed at Janelle. “Get him out of here!” She held up a hand. “Yeah, I know he’s heavy.” She turned to point at Colin. “You, get up!” Cutting off his objection, she continued, “Your leg isn’t so far gone you can’t help her help you.” Finally, she pointed to a nearby apartment complex. “Get in there. When you’re safe, call for help.”
“Nobody will come,” Janelle whined pathetically.
“Try anyway.”
“Everyone is under curfew because of the Darkness.”
“You should have thought of that before you shoplifted a magical artifact for kicks.” Wanda was in no mood to coddle these brats. “Or you could stay out here with us—and that!” She glanced over at the giant ooze, which was back on the move, this time directly towards the group.
Reluctantly, Janelle and Colin picked up and began a slow shuffle to safety, releasing a litany of curses along the way.

“I should be able to neutralize the crystal’s magic if I can reach it,” she called out, finally answering Hitsugaya’s question. “To do that, I’ll have to send a hex down one of the ‘cannons’ when it’s not firing, which won’t be easy. Or you could try cutting a different access hole for me with that impressive sword of yours. Either way, I could use a distraction when the time comes.”
She paused, hand glowing and at the ready when it seemed the ooze might start in her direction. “Third option: Try blasting the crystal right out of the ooze by force. If I can get my hands directly on it, that’d be even easier.”

Which was just fine, really. He preferred to use his sword anyway.
That didn't mean he didn't still feel patronized. There was just something about the way she continued to speak to him that suggested she wasn't taking the truth about him seriously.
"When you see the new opening, shoot."
That was all he said before a blur into shunpo, blade digging deep into the ooze's form with more ease than any sword should. The creature actually made a noise presumably indicative of pain, but that didn't slow him. A pile of gelatanous 'innards' splattered to the groud, and in the next breath, he was away from any ability that his partner could fire off.

Wanda waited, on alert, ready for her opening. And when it came, she fired.
Unfortunately, the ooze being ooze, it sealed itself off almost instantly. Wanda’s hex bolt was dead on target but had no effect because it had been meant only for the crystal.
“Change of plans!” she shouted at Hitsugaya. “Hit it with everything you’ve got. Give it too many wounds to handle. We’ll either get the hole we need or tear it all away until there’s nothing left.”
Immediately, Wanda began pelting the grey ooze with hex bolts manifested with the specific intent of destabilizing it. With each hit, the targeted ooze was left pockmarked. Eventually, she’d get through far enough to hit the crystal. That is, if Hitsugaya didn’t manage to make a permanent hole first.
The crystal was infuriated by the attack. In retaliation, it created several long tendrils that lashed out at its assailants. While these makeshift appendages were a danger, their formation also left the ooze with even less resources with which to heal itself.

Those smaller ones, at least, were easily enough handled. A significant drop in the surrounding air temperature was enough to freeze them solid, along with any new ones that might form. No sense in having extra things to fight.
Of course, the temperature drop wasn't enough to do much to the ooze that was powered by the crystal. At best, it would slow it down some, or perhaps slow down its regeneration. But he couldn't be certain.
He had to shunpo away from the tendrils as they came for him, but his experiences in fighting Luppi's released form served him well here, and he managed it with relative ease. Any that came close would meet his sword, their ends lopped off, however temporarily.
And all the while he fended these off, he chanted a kidou under his breath. Using the incantation boosted the power of any given spell. When he had a clear shot, he let it go.
"Hadou no gojuuyon: Haien."
The sky flared purple for a few seconds, and a beam of the same-coloured light blasted through the ooze. The nature of this spell was nullification; even partial effect would slow regeneration enough for the woman's magic to reach the crystal.

Bits of ooze splattered on the ground, reverting back to their original red color and wobbling about pitifully like so much sad, squashed Jello until the cold got to them. While the tendrils quickly went from lashing out with purpose to flailing blindly before they were reabsorbed because the crystal was no longer able to keep both the body and them intact.
Though Hitsugaya had been able to avoid the tendrils while they were active, Wanda hadn’t quite been so lucky. On her shoulder was a fresh red welt from where one had managed to strike her exposed flesh. Ignoring the pain caused by the wound, she concentrated on nullifying the crystal's magic. When a powerful blast of purple light hit the ooze, she instinctively sensed it was the moment to strike.
A glowing red hex shot out from Wanda’s fingertips on a direct path to the now-exposed smoky quartz. The instant it hit, a bright flash of grey light erupted from the crystal, temporarily blinding her. When she could see again, the quartz lay silent and cold on the ground amongst the frozen remnants of the fire ooze.
Without hesitation, Wanda raced over to the stolen artifact and gingerly scooped it up.

So it was over, finally. Good riddance. His reiatsu exterted a momentary pressure on the air, shattering the frozen bits of ooze. He scanned the immediate area, checking for more threats, but nothing else was present. Tch. Just as well.
"Something like that shouldn't just be lying around for someone to take on a whim."
He was making assumptions, true. But those two teenagers hardly seemed like master criminals; he was pretty confident that he was assuming correctly.
