July Arrivals Log
Who: July Arrivals, Greeters, NPC recruiters & anyone else who happens to be hanging around the Tower Apartments to 'welcome' newcomers.
When: Throughout May, 2012 (Please Specify Date & Time in Thread Header)
Where: The Sector 4 Baseball Diamond, Parking Lot & Lobby of the Tower Apartments
Summary: This is your catch-all one stop log for arrival interactions! New Newcomers can also meet and mingle in the apartment lobby.
Warnings: Nausea, potential for violence, language- add on any warnings or ratings as they come up.
It feels like a whiplash, like being plucked up into the sky and sucked through a very tight dark space before being deposited rather roughly in the City. Your character will be disoriented, dizzy, slightly nauseous, and very sore upon arriving in Siren's Port It is your choice whether your character arrives during the safety of the day or the danger of night.
Until recently, no one knew why, but every new arrival from another world gets deposited in the dead center of an ill-kept baseball diamond.
Some of the fences and signboards have been replaced with information and welcome signs, frequently kept up by Newcomers as encouragement (though from time to time some form of degrading tag might appear here or there, 'Go Home!' or 'Now You're Fucked, Newmeat' 'Welcome to Sirens Port, Population: Too Many to Add One More' and 'Attention Newcomers: Please wait here till sunset sirens to receive your welcoming package! =) ')
A person is thrown from their pull somewhere within the fenced-in baseball field, either in the dirty infield or tossed rolling into the overgrown dirty outfield. A recent fire has charred the left side of the outfield, and grass is only starting to grow back.
Standing on second base and facing home plate, one will see a rotten, old and deteriorating backstop and chain link fencing, much like any little league baseball field. Broken down bleachers made of worn out green painted wood can be seen in disarray behind this, and some old trees line the wall and fencing along the right side.
To your left is a walled in Dugout with a secured door. The dugouts are made of thick concrete and set low into the earth. This one has been outfitted as a safe place to enter during the night to hide and wait out the morning. Sometimes Greeters can be found here, waiting for people to show up. The Dugout to the right has also been cemented over and secured with a heavily guarded and armored door.
The Baseball Diamond is held by the Neutral Government, allowing greeters access to the infield to retrieve new arrivals. However, the small building constructed over the right dugout is still guarded heavily by government-controlled Voids, to block public access to the Core. Those who cooperate with greeters will be treated fairly and be given helpful information, lead to the Tower Apartments and offered a month's lodging. Those who put up a fight will be met with Voids and detained by police.
Just beyond the fence, in the Tower Apartments parking lot and lobby, SERO and AGI recruiters will be passing out informational leaflets presenting company propaganda, including discounted coupon booklets and travel-sized toiletries as a "Newcomer Welcome Package".
Other then the lights around the Core dugout, there is one single electric light above home plate that remains on, even in the Darkness. There is an open walkway near the dugouts that leads into the parking lot of the Tower Apartments. The front doors of Tower One are always kept unlocked, but you had best close them again quickly if you slip inside during the night. The office of the Landlord is well marked near the lobby, and you'll receive keys there.
The second tower is abandoned, it looks like there was some kind of bombing. Asking around, you might hear about the anti-newcomer movement and an attempt to blow up both towers, explosive charges set up in the elevator shafts five months ago. Tower Two's weren't disabled in time. The building is taped off and you'll be advised not to go wandering in there- it's no doubt structurally unsound, though the first tower still stands tall and (mostly) functioning. Though temporary housing services are funded by SERO and AGI, they are now run buy the Newcomers themselves. With heavy funding and support contacts from both companies, the building is in a state of slow remodeling.

Iroh for his part was very confused by her reaction. While he had experienced hostility at his name before, it was typically from the Earth Kingdom. That was no longer an issue, and he was a citizen of the city he had tried to invade while part of the Fire Nation. She seemed to have some sort of recognition about him at the very least.
"Trick? I've considered that. You've been drawn to this world by an incredibly power spirit known only as The Core. Little is known about it, but it has drawn people from all different times and places. I am not sure who these Equalists are, but I am not part of them. Whether you choose to believe me or not, is of course up to you." he stated calmly as if just talking about some interest tidbit, and not a world shattering thing.
no subject
"Okay, let's back up and make sure I've got this straight. You're telling me you're the Iroh--I mean, the original General Iroh, not some Equalist look-alike trying to pull a fast one on me--and that I'm in another world somehow because some crazy spirit-thing randomly pulled me here."
Korra's shoulders were squared, arms crossed. Anyone would have to admit that this was a pretty hard story to sell, and she wasn't feeling very charitable with her trust at the moment.
"Okay, pal. If you aren't an Equalist, prove it. Firebend." That wouldn't conclusively prove anything, of course, but she'd never met any benders who were sympathizers with the Equalists and Amon didn't count.

"Retired for a number of years now." he corrected. He then proceeded to calmly sit down and made a little pile of twigs, and set up a tea pot and filled it with a container of water, and some tea leaves. He was completely out in the open and vulnerable to any sort of attack, and simply goes about his task meticulously. A nice calming Jasmine tea would do quite nicely.
With a small and precise flick of his finger the flame was started and he manipulated to go at the right temperature necessary for optimal tea brewing, he motioned for her to sit.

Korra plopped down across from Iroh at the impromptu fire, wondering what sort of person actually carried a teapot and tea around with them just in case. Now that she thought about it, that was the kind of thing that Iroh had been known for.
The surreality of the situation was beyond anything she'd encountered in her life thus far. It occurred to her that she might've been having some kind of hallucination, but everything felt pretty solid, from the ground beneath her to Naga's wet nose at her elbow.
"So..." she eventually said, "you're Iroh and this is another world. You wouldn't happen to know a way back, would you? Everyone back home is in a lot of trouble and they need my help." Not that she could be of much use without her powers, but Korra couldn't just sit by while Amon was terrorizing people. There had to be something she could do.

The tea was coming along nicely, it would be perfect in another minute or so. He never rushed tea brewing, that would destroy the flavour and character of the blend, an insult to the art.
"I'm afraid I am stuck here just as you are. What sort of trouble is everyone in back home?" He inquired curiously. Who knew what sorts of things were going on back in his own world. He had heard the Core took people from different times, perhaps it was some point in the past or in the future she was from?

"There's an insane bloodbender running around taking people's bending away" she explained, gesticulating expressively. "He started the Equalist movement under a false identity to turn non-benders against benders and he has these chi blockers and he's launched this war in the city and--argh!" Korra sat again, heavily, dropping her head into her hands as she leaned forward. "How can this be happening?" It was a rhetorical question, of course. She doubted Iroh would have the answer.

The tea was at last ready, and Iroh calmly poured Korra a cup and one for himself.
"Sit and have a cup, you are going through a stressful time. I do not have the answers for all your questions, but I do know that conflict is part of the human experience, as is resolving these conflicts. My brother was poised to destroy the world, and he was stopped, even with the might of the Fire Nation at the time. At that time, things were dire as well, but we kept our hopes up and fought out of love and for a better tomorrow. The darkest hour always seems to occur before the dawn."
"As for here... if you are stuck in a storm, do not fight the waves, but seek the eye of the storm, only in the calm can we truly see the way." he said more sage like, sipping his tea. It was exactly how he preferred it.

The fragrant steam filled her nostrils, relaxing her shoulders a little. Korra struggled within herself; she didn't want to give up, but at the same time, it seemed like there really was nothing she could do. Resignation left her weary, so she quietly sipped at the tea for a moment.
"This is really good, thanks," she said eventually. It didn't escape her that she was sitting and having tea with the famed Iroh, who'd been dead for years by the time she was born. This would be quite a tale for her friends back home, if she ever saw them again.
no subject
He sipped his own tea for a moment, and watched her body language. She certainly was expressive with it. It was unfortunate that she was feeling this way, but he would do his best to give her some guidance.
Iroh inclined his head at the tea compliment. And then he glanced around, almost to check if anyone was there.
"The secret ingredient is love."
no subject
Swirling the tea in her cup, Korra took another sip. "Love, huh? I'll remember that."

If there was a new Avatar, one who followed Aang, that would mean she was from many years in the future, or something terrible had happened to him. He sincerely hoped it was a long life Aang had lived, thirteen was terribly young.

He shakes his head a moment. There would be more time to think about that later.
"Aang had not yet mastered all the elements when he defeated Ozai, and fought him when firebending was enhanced. The legacy of the Avatar is not invincible guardians who dole out justice, but the human spirit triumphing despite the odds. This new Avatar will fufill their destiny, I am certain." Iroh said returning to the topic which was of more concern to his young friend.
no subject
"Anyway, why don't you tell me more about yourself?" She'd read about him in books and scrolls, but that wasn't quite the same as meeting someone in the flesh and hearing the stories from them. This was a rare opportunity, and as down as she felt, it would've been foolish to pass it up.
no subject
"Well, I am rather fond of my tea, as you probably already guessed. And also quite fond of my food, haha!"
He patted his stomach, though at this point it was actually quite toned. He still did very much enjoy his food. Which reminded him...
"You and Naga are no doubt hungry, yes? After we finish our tea, would you like to get something to eat? There is a party going on at one of the beaches, or if you'd prefer somewhere quieter we can go to my place, and food can be arranged." she had a tough day, so he imagined she would probably go for the quieter option, but you never knew.
no subject
"I should feed her," Korra said, patting Naga's shoulder. "Are there any woods or ponds around here? Lakes? Any place she could hunt for herself?"
no subject
"At night, this place is very different, and I suggest you find yourself shelter. There are Sirens which indicate the Darkness is coming, it is a dangerous time to be out, no matter how strong you are. Restless spirits of the dead walk the streets, and vanish when the sun rises, only to rise again in the next night." he explained gravely. It was an unfortunate part about this place.
"There are apartments which will offer you shelter, and you can access some funds to get yourself started."
no subject
As he told her about the darkness, Korra listened with concern. Restless spirits? "Has anyone tried... I don't know, talking with them somehow?" she asked. In their world, dealing with a wayward spirit would actually have been her job as the Avatar. She might have even been willing to help here, if she'd had her powers. Spirits probably wouldn't pay her any heed now, anyway.
She nodded when he mentioned apartments. It made sense that they'd have a place for new arrivals to live if there were really that many people being pulled into this world. Standing, Korra dusted off the seat of her pants, finishing off the last mouthful of tea.
"Maybe you could show me where the apartments are? Naga can take us there."
no subject
He sighed a little at the suggestion. There had been efforts made, but it was all in vain. "There have been efforts to communicate with them, even by spirits with a more benevolent attitude, but nothing has worked thus far." He explained sipping more at his tea, taking his time more so then Korra.
"Certainly, I would be glad to show you once I finish my tea." You had to take time to appreciate the tea after all.
no subject
She plucked up a few blades of grass as he sipped at his beverage. Then she scratched her knee, then her side. "So there are other spirit here?" she asked after a moment when Iroh's words sank in. "Spirits that live here among the living? Or does this place also have a spirit world?"
no subject
"Yes, there are spirits which you can communicate with, just as in our world, some are dangerous, others can be helpful and kind. It is best to be respectful and cautious around them. There is even a couple of dragons here, one of them Aurican can speak in the human tongue."
