July Arrivals Log

Who: July Arrivals, Greeters, NPC recruiters & anyone else who happens to be hanging around the Tower Apartments to 'welcome' newcomers.
When: Throughout May, 2012 (Please Specify Date & Time in Thread Header)
Where: The Sector 4 Baseball Diamond, Parking Lot & Lobby of the Tower Apartments
Summary: This is your catch-all one stop log for arrival interactions! New Newcomers can also meet and mingle in the apartment lobby.
Warnings: Nausea, potential for violence, language- add on any warnings or ratings as they come up.

It feels like a whiplash, like being plucked up into the sky and sucked through a very tight dark space before being deposited rather roughly in the City. Your character will be disoriented, dizzy, slightly nauseous, and very sore upon arriving in Siren's Port It is your choice whether your character arrives during the safety of the day or the danger of night.

Until recently, no one knew why, but every new arrival from another world gets deposited in the dead center of an ill-kept baseball diamond.

Some of the fences and signboards have been replaced with information and welcome signs, frequently kept up by Newcomers as encouragement (though from time to time some form of degrading tag might appear here or there, 'Go Home!' or 'Now You're Fucked, Newmeat' 'Welcome to Sirens Port, Population: Too Many to Add One More' and 'Attention Newcomers: Please wait here till sunset sirens to receive your welcoming package! =) ')

A person is thrown from their pull somewhere within the fenced-in baseball field, either in the dirty infield or tossed rolling into the overgrown dirty outfield. A recent fire has charred the left side of the outfield, and grass is only starting to grow back.

Standing on second base and facing home plate, one will see a rotten, old and deteriorating backstop and chain link fencing, much like any little league baseball field. Broken down bleachers made of worn out green painted wood can be seen in disarray behind this, and some old trees line the wall and fencing along the right side.

To your left is a walled in Dugout with a secured door. The dugouts are made of thick concrete and set low into the earth. This one has been outfitted as a safe place to enter during the night to hide and wait out the morning. Sometimes Greeters can be found here, waiting for people to show up. The Dugout to the right has also been cemented over and secured with a heavily guarded and armored door.

The Baseball Diamond is held by the Neutral Government, allowing greeters access to the infield to retrieve new arrivals. However, the small building constructed over the right dugout is still guarded heavily by government-controlled Voids, to block public access to the Core. Those who cooperate with greeters will be treated fairly and be given helpful information, lead to the Tower Apartments and offered a month's lodging. Those who put up a fight will be met with Voids and detained by police.

Just beyond the fence, in the Tower Apartments parking lot and lobby, SERO and AGI recruiters will be passing out informational leaflets presenting company propaganda, including discounted coupon booklets and travel-sized toiletries as a "Newcomer Welcome Package".

Other then the lights around the Core dugout, there is one single electric light above home plate that remains on, even in the Darkness. There is an open walkway near the dugouts that leads into the parking lot of the Tower Apartments. The front doors of Tower One are always kept unlocked, but you had best close them again quickly if you slip inside during the night. The office of the Landlord is well marked near the lobby, and you'll receive keys there.

The second tower is abandoned, it looks like there was some kind of bombing. Asking around, you might hear about the anti-newcomer movement and an attempt to blow up both towers, explosive charges set up in the elevator shafts five months ago. Tower Two's weren't disabled in time. The building is taped off and you'll be advised not to go wandering in there- it's no doubt structurally unsound, though the first tower still stands tall and (mostly) functioning. Though temporary housing services are funded by SERO and AGI, they are now run buy the Newcomers themselves. With heavy funding and support contacts from both companies, the building is in a state of slow remodeling.

"What do you want me to say?" He held up his hands defensively. "This whole situation is like some kind of bizarre dream. I was here before, but I don't remember. Monsters that can harm Proxies come out at night, and we've apparently been transported to a city in an alternate past, and we can't leave, and you're turning into a Proxy, and this Core thing can bring people back to life and give people powers and who knows what else? If I accept that as the truth, am I even allowed to be surprised anymore?" This had come so far out of left field for Vincent that the only thing he could think to do was shrug and try to make the best of it.

On the subject of the bullets, Vincent sighed. "I'll be careful, then. What else?"

She started to say something and then stopped mid-retort, listening to him for once. He should be more worried, she supposed, but what he said was true; she was throwing too much at him and not enough of it had reasonable explanations. If he was truly concerned - and he was - then there was still little he could do about it except accept the truth, no matter how hard it was. For Re-l, this had been difficult. For Vincent, it would probably be even harder. Instead, she nodded. "You're right. Sorry." There needed to be a better way to address all of this.

"There's little else that's so dangerous. The rest... The rest of it is semantics, things you'll need to know to get around. I can fill you in on all of that another time, after you've settled." Which brought her to her next point. "Come with me. You can stay in my apartment. I'm not going to subject you to the filth of the Tower Apartments."

"Settled in." he repeated. It was dawning on him that it would probably take a long while before they were able to return to their own world and their own time. He never thought he'd be facing this situation again, of trying to integrate in a city that didn't care or may even be openly hostile toward him. He'd have to get an apartment, and a job, and... Re-L was offering to let him stay with her. Wait what?

Vincent was a little taken aback. "Y-your apartment? But... are you sure? You won't mind?"

"Yes, settled in." She could already tell he'd be disappointed. It took him long enough to be settled in Romdeau and it still wasn't the same. She didn't blame him for his apprehension. "The requirements aren't as strict as Romdeau's...though I would warn you not to expect to ever be treated like a real citizen here. Newcomers never will be, not unless we dissolved our identities." And it wasn't worth the trouble. "You won't be alone this time," she offered, a paltry comfort, but one she could afford to give him.

Re-l raised an eyebrow. "Yes, my apartment. It's big enough, after all." She shrugged. "It's much better than what you'd have to deal with at the Towers. They're worse than the Immigrant District back home."

"Don't worry." he laughed humourlessly. "Becoming a fellow citizen was never a possibility for me in the first place. I know better than to try it here. But thank you." He smiled at her faintly. Knowing he wasn't alone did make a huge difference.

"Well, if you really don't mind." Despite himself, he was still surprised that Re-L would let him stay in her apartment. It wasn't as though they hadn't been living together all that time on the Rabbit, but that was different. Out in the Waste there was no one else around. But Re-L had been here for two years already. She had a life without him. Though Romdeau was gone and this archaic city couldn't be more different from it, she felt just as out of reach as when he knew her as Inspector Re-L.

"But still--" Dammit, there was that frustration again, not directed at him. The Romdeau system had been effective in so many ways but not when it came to him. Not when he had practically designed them to reject him. She'd suspected it before but, looking back on it, all of the signs were there. She hated the idea that he had damned himself from the beginning.

She shook her head. "I don't mind," she said. "If you don't feel comfortable with it... Well, you can leave whenever you want. There's plenty of places to go, cheap housing. There's a boarding house I've been looking after in my spare time you could go to if it suited you. It's up to you." It would simply be easier for her to explain things when he was right there. Communicating over text would just be too much of a pain for her to rightly deal with under these sorts of circumstances.

The thought that Vincent might have sabotaged his own admittance into Romdeau hadn't yet occurred to him, thankfully.

At the mention of other housing options, Vincent had to take a good look at his life and his choices. On the one hand, he could go somewhere Re-L told him was even worse than the Immigrant District. Or he could find a cheap apartment somewhere and life on his own. Or he could live with Re-L. There was really only one choice here, and he was a fool to hesitate. "Oh, well, in that case, I'll go with you."

And for the first time since he'd arrived, Re-l actually nearly smiled at his quick acceptance of her offer. She wasn't a fool; she knew he'd take it. If not now, he'd ask her another time once he saw the state of the Tower Apartments. It almost had her chuckling as she gestured for him to follow her back to her bike, which she nearly let fall in her haste to find him.

"Like I said, there'll be things you need to hear later about all that's happened." What she would be willing to share about herself, anyway. She'd kept him in the dark last time. Perhaps she should be more open with him now. "But you should take it easy for the first day until the nausea goes away." She grabbed the helmet and offered it to him.

"Taking it easy sounds like a good idea." he said. "I've got a lot to think about already." It hadn't even been a day since he had recovered his memories, from his perspective. On top of being transported to an entirely different world, that was a lot to digest. He followed Re-L and took the offered helmet.

Re-l let him buckle the helmet on while she slipped onto the bike, pulling out a hair tie to keep it back. He didn't need to be blinded by it while they were driving. "Get on," she said simply, less of a command and more of a nudge. "My apartment's not too far and it's early still. We can get home quickly."
