falling in the black, slipping through the cracks
Who: Riku, Xigbar, and then two others.
When: Night. (Actual date will be when the log ends.)
Where: Sector 3.
Summary: Riku goes out to train and encounters something (and someone) he should not have.
Warnings: SPOILERS FOR KH3D. Violence. Fridge horror. Will update as needed.
[It's not so often any longer that Riku has the time to go out into the Darkness to fight. His job and providing for his friends always takes priority. Still, it's nice to get out, to stretch his legs, and to put his power to good use. He can make sure he's still on top of his game and training hard, even if he doesn't have the time to go to Terra's dojo.
He makes his way out through Sector 4 and then into Sector 3, fighting monsters as he goes. They aren't too much trouble, just enough to work up a sweat and to flex the muscles. He hasn't even tried to use his magic yet.
Riku continues on, unheeded by the dark. He's almost comfortable, having grown used to wandering on his own in the deepest of darknesses. He's still wary, however, and even more so when he thinks he sees someone in a dark coat head down a side street.
He frowns. Who's that? It's too tall to be Roxas or Xion. He hurries after them.]

And judging by the absence of a smile, the young man's words may have an impact after all.
Fragments of memory still appear every so often. They were (are) ill-timed. Memories of allies. Of enemies. What had taken place in one world, other specific events that were held in another. What was then. What once was. What still is to come.
As Xigbar speaks in turn, that only solidifies the latter pertaining to their plans. The threats said are strong, but their meanings remain empty to him. There is nothing to worry about. Nothing to be concerned over.
So what if he had 'felt' before. This is the present. The Now. He can care less.
Having the advantage, it's easy for him to give the order and be done with it. However, it would also be messy if not dealt with properly.
...But when did they ever do things properly?]

Grinning widely, Xigbar's expression is the only warning Riku will get before a brilliant flash of light overtakes the room.
It clears, and then, it's down, down, down, plunging into an infinite sea of space, marked by the rapid passing of floors, concrete, and earth.
There's no going up, only the terrifying increase of velocity as the fall continues in a never-ending loop. It's a trick he's used rarely, but now it seems only fitting.
Unphased by the aberration he's wrought, Xigbar dives after Riku, his guns at ready. ]

The room disappears and is replaced by some kind of endless vortex of space, the same rooms passing again and again and again. Riku twists in his bonds as he falls, flipping once and tangling himself further in the thorns. He summons his Keyblade, the weapon turning in his hand. He slips it beneath the bonds and slices through them, allowing him to drop out of the web with minimal damage.
That is, until Xigbar comes back into play.
Riku isn't used to the lack of gravity nor the speed at which they're simply falling. It's less like floating and more like the world is simply falling past them, looping again and again. He doesn't know what he can grasp or hold on to...and he's not going to get the chance to figure it out with Xigbar falling at him.
He immediately summons up another Thunder spell, letting the lightning streak across the room. His feet find something, some sort of handle, and then he's launching himself back at Xigbar, Keyblade out and ready.]
no subject
Twisting in midair, he evades the spell with ease, a mad sort of gleam in his eye as he hurtles towards the Keyblade wielder. It's only at the last moment, right before they collide that he vanishes, appearing behind and below.
Firing rapidly at Riku, there are some which go astray and deliberately miss. He'll make use of those later. For now he'll settle for skewering the kid with as many bullets as possible. ]
no subject
He doesn't get all of them. One slices through his side with expert precision and he nearly recoils just like that. A barrier comes up only long enough to take some of the punishment off of himself before he's back to trying to follow Xigbar.
Riku knows this won't work. He has the even the playing field somehow.
He spins and summons his darkness, the dark that's his and no one else's, and starts slinging out as many blasts as he can manage.]
no subject
After so many years of hiding the truth and masking what he is and shall become, it's a phenomenal sort of release to finally show his true colors. That isn't to say he's thrown caution to the winds -- not at all. He just doesn't have a reason to hide exactly how much he's enjoying this.
The air shifts, and he senses the rising darkness in the teenager falling above. His smile just stretches wider.
Go on, kid. I double dare you.
The bullets he sent off moments before circle and close the gap, a flurry of deadly lights rapidly converging around the teenager. If Riku manages to evade that barrage, he'll be receiving another from above as Xigbar moves again. ]
no subject
He dares to unleash that dark because he knows he can control it. Without Xehanort's Heartless tainting it, it's not even true darkness any longer, and he wields it to his liking. He lashes out with several wisps of darkness and sends them right at Xigbar as he falls, a controlled calculation to his movements.
He has to stop - is forced to do so - when he sees those needle-lights raining down towards him. He braces himself and calls up his shields, but the sheer number of them cracks his defense. A few hit their mark, disappearing into small shocks into his body. The pain distracts him and he curls, falling faster. He spins in mid-air and throws another barrage of his dark at Xigbar, hoping to get him closer so he can use his blade.]
no subject
Diving faster, he hurtles straight for the teenager. Unphased by the oncoming attacked, he warps at the last moment and retaliates -- not with bullets this time but rather a wave of darkness from the tips of his guns. It's Ansem's, it's Xemnas's, it's Xehanort's, and this is only the beginning. ]
no subject
The other man warps and Riku suddenly feels that darkness. He whips around and comes face-to-face with a wave of darkness so familiar it makes him freeze up.
The shield returns and takes most of the impact. It shakes what little grounding he has but not his resolve, which is why he lashes back out with his own blade in a vain attempt to catch Xigbar.]
Fight me without your dumb tricks!
no subject
The challenge only makes him laugh. ]
No "tricks", eh, tiny brooder?
[ The manic smile he wears stretches even wider. ]
Have it your way.
[ Falling freely now, a swirl of darkness abruptly flares around his body. It's a massive thing, far greater than anything he's exhibited yet, so much so that his own darkness is practically engulfed in its folds.
He's never done this before, never fully tapped the depths of what lies inside him...but now, he is.
The shadows lengthen, and as Xigbar himself disappears in the encroaching darkness, it swallows everything else. ]
no subject
Xigbar engulfs the room in that darkness, that familiar inky black that he's come to know so well, and then he disappears inside of it. The entire mess gives the Keybearer vertigo; he no longer has the reality of falling, instead engulfed by the illusion that he is stagnant when he knows it's not true.
Riku closes his eyes and comes to terms with their new battleground, his senses on fire.
Darkness prickles at his neck, setting him on edge. He can't sense anything else; it's too overpowering. He grits his teeth in anger, readying himself for the onslaught he knows Xigbar will deliver.]
no subject
It'll be enough, though, and that's all that matters.
The shadows pool, and eventually he emerges. The guns have disappeared (they were Braig's weapons, not his), and for this, he no longer needs them. A mesh of purple and black gathering at his fingertips, the edges of his coat billow slightly as the power builds.
Curling the fingers of his right hand, he stretches it forth, almost casually. Almost instantly, fiery shards of darkness begin to form. It's space mixed with the unnatural power he's gained over ten years of housing Xehanort's heart, and it's high time it served it's purpose.
Gathering the fragments about him, he sends them in waves -- a whirlwind of fire and shadow. ]
no subject
It's then that the darkness opens up and changes, all cloying and fitting to Xigbar's own element. He's never seen it do something like this before; it's a different breed of darkness. It's tainted his element and warped it...
And now Riku's in trouble.
He backs up and whips his blade around, long and powerful strokes slicing through the waves. It doesn't leave him unharmed; the flames lick at his bare arms and burn him, leaving dark lines on his skin. They remain even after he banishes the dark from in front of him, hand moving into the black and trying to harness it to himself, and they sting into him.
He huffs in pain and then throws his own attack at Xigbar, his blade singing with ice to combat the fire.]
no subject
Having opened himself to darkness, he's submitted to it as well, and in so doing, allowed it to have free reign. It's power under control, but also controlling, in its way, because of the very nature of its source. The change is in more than his scent and power level -- it's a more visceral sort of transformation marked not only by his stance, but also his demeanor.
Xigbar is the type to taunt and play -- whoever stands in his place cares only to see Riku submit.
The air warps around him, absorbing the brunt of the blast before some of the ice gets through. It frosts his coat but only barely makes an impact. He smiles, and though it's no longer manic, there's dark purpose in that ominously knowing glance.
What's left of the shards return, dancing about him with deadly brilliance as he walks towards the teenager. Darkness all but pools beneath his feet, and for a moment, he disappears entirely. Emerging from behind and below, he only has to gesture, the blacks line streaking Riku's limbs suddenly magnified in strength and weight. There'll be a crushing sensation too, like the air itself is trying to shove the teen into the ground.
He has plans for this one that will not go unanswered. ]
no subject
But this is something he can't predict and can't fight like this. Xigbar is feeding off of the darkness. He's changed, even within the past half an hour, and his brutality is disconcerting.
He spins his body and his blade and keeps attacking until Xigbar disappears. He holds his blade up and at the ready, prepared to fight as he turns and moves, unwilling to let himself be caught unawares. It happens anyway, despite his best intentions; the darkness catches his limbs and paralyzes him, forcing him down.
He drops to his knees and struggles vainly to keep his head up, his blade clenched between his fingers. He grits his teeth angrily, refusing to give in.]
no subject
He kneels in front of the boy and grasps his chin, pinching it between his thumb and forefinger as he searches Riku's eyes. He holds the same darkness as they, and instead of embracing it, he locks it away in that prison of a heart.
Darkness gathering at his fingertips once more, he gives Riku no warning whatsoever before he lays his hand over Riku's heart. It's soft, the gesture barely even noticeable....until the darkness seeps into Riku's chest.
He doesn't actually move, but there's a violent sort of tug as well as a thunderous blow directed towards Riku's interior. He's calling to that darkness, demanding that it appear, and if he has to break apart Riku's heart to force him to submit, then that is by all means an acceptable alternative. ]
no subject
As Xigbar takes him by the chin, he feels certain that he's going to die here. Helpless, he thinks the older man will put a needle bullet into his forehead and end him right here and now. To that end, he isn't afraid; the tilt of his head is proud and almost cocky as he stares him down. He isn't afraid to die.
It's when he settles a hand on his chest that he suddenly doubts that preconceived notion.
And then the darkness slams into his heart and tugs all at the same time. His eyes widen in pure agony, the push and pull of the element hidden in his heart awakening it. It happens so quickly that he actually chokes on the pain, his heart feeling like it's going to be ripped asunder just by that measure alone.]
no subject
He calls to it, feels the pulse of it responding...but not enough. It's different, changed into something not quite pure.
His brow furrows, his hold on Riku's heart tight yet somehow unable to tap it as he has his own. There's light too, more than he expected, and in a fit of pique, he abruptly decides to smother it with another wave of darkness. ]
no subject
He doesn't have the thought to realize Xigbar's displeased about something. The darkness wraps around the light within him and threatens to taint it, smother it down and corrupt every ounce of it.
No. He won't allow it.
His eyes narrow into slits of sea-green and his mouth moves in angry defiance.]
Get off.
[It's a whispered hiss, a betrayal of weakness. But then Riku's arms move and his instincts take over, his body moving without him. He rips through the darkness, his power curling in his free hand. It burns and it aches with familiar intensity, and it is his and no one else's. It is all he's worked for and all he has embraced in his years on the path of dawn.
He slams it without preamble into Xigbar's good eye, power scorching his hand.]
Get off of me!
no subject
He has only a fraction of a section to jerk his head back before excruciating pain rips through face, his eye, the brat targeted his eye --
Something abruptly snaps, and it's in the shock of the moment that the hold on his heart is broken.
Jerking back, both hands fly to his face (his eyes), and there's a terrible howl of pain, fury, and dismay as he staggers away. There's blood on his gloves, but he can't see it, he can't see anything, and though he hasn't been brought to his knees, he's rapidly losing control. The darkness is breaking apart, as is the infinite loop, but no no he can't fucking lose this he will not be a failure.
Blind and bleeding, he whips his head around, searching for Riku's darkness with pain-addled senses. It's vague idea, but it's enough.
Infuriated beyond measure, he directs every last bit of power he has at Riku -- darkness, as well as the crushing weight and tear of space.
It's a last ditch effort, weakened greatly by his agony and handicap. ]

Released, he rises and grips his blade even tighter, the pain of the darkness in his cuts receding. He doesn't bother with a Cure spell, not this late in the game.
Space shifts again and darkness comes with it, but he's prepared for it this time. He rushes Xigbar and follows his movements as he falls back. He needs to catch him and bring him down before he disappears again into the darkness and recovers.
And he does. He bounds inside Xigbar's defenses and lets the dark wash over him; it burns and it stings, hurting him, but he couldn't care less. His blade is out and another curl of his power licks his fingertips. He goes for the final strike, hurling the ball of dawn-dark into him, his eyes alight with fury.]
no subject
He can only sense it, and his ability to discern things now is fragmented at best. He manages one more violent wave of spatial slicing before the assault slams into him.
The darkness evaporates then, and there's an abrupt sense of vertigo as the two of them drop unceremoniously back into the office.
Xigbar is down for the count. ]
no subject
He debates for just a moment whether he wants to impale the man and end it now. But with this new revelation, now knowing he has a heart, he can't bring himself to. Not now.
The Keybearer turns and fixes his gaze determinedly on Xemnas, the grip on his blade tightening.
There's no taunt or sneer, or brave jibe. Instead, he simply launches himself at the Superior with little care to his defenses. He wants this over and he'll be the first to strike, hoping it'll take the older Nobody off guard.]
no subject
The ripple in the same area begins to tear open. He knows the Second is in his element. Dealing with the teenager should not take too long on his end. And, without fail, it appears things have gone well.
...
No.
No.
This is not what he is expecting at all.
Several degrees of an expression, something close to a real reaction, barely cross his features as Riku rushes him. An arm comes up to block, but the force of the attack sends them both back, crashing into the other side of the room. Crude execution or not, it does what is planned effectively enough.]
no subject
It should have been a simple enough matter. There should have been no question as to who would come out on top. It was glorious, utterly glorious, as Xigbar finally tapped into the power within, the sign of just who he was becoming. It really shouldn't have been an issue at all.
When the two are finally ejected from the vortex, however, it's more than apparent that something is wrong. Things haven't gone the way they should have... Xigbar has been damaged. Broken in some way.
His vessel. His vessel. The first one he'd chosen...
His hands clench into fists for that moment and the darkness beneath his skin boils up in fury, wreathing him, broadcasting his presence - the same darkness that Xigbar was using just mere moments ago. A step forward, out of the security of the shadows, reaching out with one hand--
--that was a bigger step than perhaps one would have expected, as suddenly he's across the room, hand still outstretched. The desk that only a little while ago Xemnas had been working at shifts, before lifting itself up from the floor and hurling itself at Riku's back.]
