Snow had heard so many things since her arrival to this strange place, but there was nothing like seeing it for herself. So this time when she heard the sirens going off she ignored them. She ventured out into the growing darkness.

She stopped being afraid of the dark as a young girl. She spent far too many lonely nights in the tower to cower from it. Then she was in the Dark Forest facing all the sinister things that lived within it.

She could feel that something sinister lurked in the night, but she refused to shy away from it. She would face it head-on and defeat it if she could.

"Monsters like these?" She stepped off the sidewalk for a second, squinting into the Darkness. "They don't have them where I'm from."

Because I'm the only monster. Me and my dad and whoever serves him.

Even if sometimes humans are just as cruel.

"Like these," Snow agreed, fingers tightening over the hilt of her knife. Of course she would back away if it was necessary but she wanted to at least try to face the Darkness.

Christina glanced back at her, for the first time noticing the knife. "Well, at least you came out armed." And given the look of Christina in her modern clothing with no place to hide weapons, she didn't- not that she needed it.

Snow noticed that but hadn't said anything. She was still learning and didn't think to question the other girl. Snow carefully continued forward, neither asking the girl to join her nor expecting her to turn away.

That noise again. Christina's instinct was to put herself in front of the other girl, even though she was the one unarmed- habit, really. Being powerful had its advantages. "Did you hear that?"

"I did," she acknowledged softly. There were things moving in the dark. She couldn't see them yet but she knew they were lurking. Unwillingly Ravenna's glass soldiers came to Snow's mind.

She could almost hear their hollow creaking... She took a breath. "Perhaps we should move indoors after all."

[worldhaditsway]

"Don't be scared," came Christina's automatic reassurance. She stepped backwards a bit, onto the sidewalk. "But yeah... We should find a place to wait it out. I could call someone."

Something snuffled just out of her line of sight in the places where the deep shadows lurked. "Hypothetically, if we had to fight, you could, right? I mean, that knife's not just for show and you really have dealt with monsters before... Right?"

"Of course," Snow answered. "If they attack, I will fight them. But I do not think it wise to attack first."

She nodded. "Walk, don't run. They'll probably attack if they think we're running away." She started walking down the sidewalk at a brisk pace. "Kinda intense for an after-dark stroll, huh?"

"Is it?" Snow tilted her head curiously. "Things are often intense in the Dark Forest."
