And you're satisfied with that?

[Oh, certainly not.]

It pays the bills, and I get to meet all sorts of interesting people.

[sequincy]

[Hm. Uryuu goes quiet after that. He hates that sort of answer, that lack of drive. If someone wants something - truly wants it - they should be fighting for it. There's no room to settle for anything less. There's no pride in it.]

[circumsutus]

[He works for the money. He works for the money and amuses himself after Darkness falls, goes out and hunts and takes apart monsters in his run down apartment kitchen, and that's good enough for now, that's good enough until his curiosity builds up enough that he has to do something drastic.


How odd, they're still walking the same way.]

[sequincy]

It doesn't seem like enough. [but that's all he'll say on it, flashing deftly out of the way as two children with speed powers barrel past them, playing a powered version of tag. Uryuu frowns after them, then seems to realize he still has his companion.]

Do you live near here?

I have my own way of keeping myself entertained.

[And that's cute, the children running around, freely using their abilities.]

[he considers that - considers what Stein said he did in his world, the humming buzz of the man's soul, the sorts of things a person can use to "keep busy" in this world.]

The Darkness?

[circumsutus]

[A nod.]

The monsters are fascinating.

[sequincy]

Do you fight them? [he used to, back when he had more of a drive to train himself. It's been at least two months since he has.]

[circumsutus]

I study them. [Training, of course, since he can't exactly afford to get out of shape, but mostly capturing them and taking them apart for research purposes.]

[sequincy]

I've known others to try. [Szayel, for one, which is an uncomfortable comparison. He wonders if they've crossed paths yet...]

What have you learned?

[circumsutus]

Surprisingly little. [Or at least, little of actual scientific merit.] The sheer variety of the creatures hinders any sort of intentional experimentation.

[So he's just been taking them apart for fun.]

[sequincy]

[Uryuu pauses mid-step, then actually stops. He tilts his head curiously.] Then what's left for you, if there's nothing intentional?

[circumsutus]

Mass data collection! [He sounds way too chipper about that.] More information never hurt a scientist!

[sequincy]

[such a disgusted face you're getting before he starts walking again]

I'll never understand it.

[circumsutus]

I wouldn't expect you to understand it.

[sequincy]

I should, after meeting so many men who do. [sourly, waiting at another light.]

[circumsutus]

... So many?

[sequincy]

I've known too many scientists. [scientists who were just like that, too. Driven to study for the sake of study itself, insatiable. Forever undeterred by concerns of whom their studies might effect. Mayuri, Szayel. Aizen, in some ways. ...Even Urahara, although less monstrous, was of that same uncomfortable distinction. Too curious, too secretive, forever probing.

...Yeah, way too many.]

And that was even before coming here. [they're probably a dime a dozen at SERO. It's why Szayel fit in so well.]

[circumsutus]

Hmmm. [That's... actually rather worrisome.] I can't say I've met many other scientists with a similar outlook.

[sequincy]

[he makes a sound that could be a laugh, if it weren't so bitter] You should meet Szayel. Provided you don't mind knowing someone who views everyone he meets as his to take apart and put under observation...

[he huffs] Everything is a test subject to him. It's perverse.

[circumsutus]

People who are too similar rarely get along.

[sequincy]

That's not funny.

[circumsutus]

Oh, I think it is. [Two people, both viewing the world as their experiment. Everything is a test subject for them, though it seems that this Szayel excludes himself from the equation.]

I'll have to watch for him.

[sequincy]

[Uryuu's eye twitches, and his stomach clenches sickly.] I doubt you could mistake him.

[Always. They're always like this.]

I missed that street back there. I mean - my turn down that street. A block back. I went too far. [he didn't and he hasn't, but it's what he thinks of first.] I have to go back. Excuse me.
