I would be a wonderful asset
Who: Lisbeth Salander (as Irene Nesser) and Phoenix Wright
When: Forward-dated to Friday, March 23, 10 AM
Where: Wright & Co. Law Offices in Sector Four
Summary: Lisbeth interviews as Irene for Wright's law offices. She needs money to pay her rent due next month.
Warnings: Nope! Lisbeth is playing a professional; she can't curse.
Lisbeth woke up early that morning even though her appointment with Mr. Wright wasn't until 10 AM. She put on a pot of coffee around 7 AM and began her work. After pulling out all of her documents that proved she was in fact Irene Nesser, she showered. She smelled like a summer meadow as she stepped out, walking naked around her apartment. She took cover up to her wasp tattoo on her neck, but did nothing about the dragon tattoo on her shoulder nor the phoenix tattoo on her thigh. After doing that, she carefully removed her piercings and put in rather impressive clear spacers. She was suspicious of the man at Tits for Tats when he said they were virtually invisible unlike the spacers used at home.
After doing so, Lisbeth put on a push-up bra and then changed into her clothes: a lovely green skirt with a maroon blouse that she tucked in. She put on make-up, jewelry, and all of the other things a young professional woman was supposed to have before finally tying up her jet-black, short hair in favor of a blonde wig with fringe bangs and fell like a waterfall over her shoulders. Lisbeth made sure everything looked okay before she grabbed her suitcase and her documents and headed out the door.
Balancing on five inch heels, she walked down from the Tower Apartments towards the address she had lifted from the network's resources. She wasn't in the least bit nervous about this interview. Lisbeth knew she would impress.
She entered the building and told the building's security that she was there to meet with Phoenix Wright. She was given a temporary pass, logged in her entrance time, and took the elevator up.
After checking in with the receptionist at the office, she sat down and waited to be called.

Another assistant might be a bit of overkill, honestly, but on the other hand, we've got to help Newcomers, and the more of us involved with the law here, the more we can guarantee fairness. Plus, Maya has plenty to do for Edgeworth, too, and maybe even Armando.)
[After finishing up one paper, he notices it's about 10 already, and, told that she's here, asks for her to be shown in.]
Ms. Nesser? Please, take a seat.

You've got quite the collection there.
no subject
So, Ms. Nesser, could you tell me a bit more about your legal experience?
no subject
While in school, I interned at many law offices like most students do. It was mostly smaller law firms, family-owned, but in my last year of college, I managed to snag an internship with the Prosecutor General's office.
It's akin to, say, a district attorney in the United States. Then after graduation, I got a full-time job there. [She pauses.]
Most of the cases I dealt with were crimes against women. Rape, sodomy, trafficking.

...I don't defend cases where I can't believe in our clients, by the way. If they're guilty, we ask them to plead guilty. It's not always ... a clean job, but it's necessary to protect those who are innocent.
no subject
But as she sized up Phoenix, she strangely believed the conviction in his voice. The brief conversations they had also led her to believe he was honest.]
From what I've heard, I am willing to trust your intuition as a defense lawyer.
[Her voice stayed level.]

Have you familiarized yourself with the legal system here? It differs in some ways from those in other people's homes. Jury trials aren't guaranteed, for example.
(Plus, it's Canadian, so it would be bound to be weird in the first place, right?)
no subject
I'm familiar with how the court system is structured and the basic and implied rights of the Canadian constitution. However, I have been reading cases slowly but surely so as to familiarize myself with loopholes and other complications that may arise in trial.

[He casts an eye around a little ruefully.] I'm afraid we're still getting some things restarted around here. But I want to try to get as many Newcomers involved with the law as possible around here. And we have a pretty significant case backlog already, especially since not every defense attorney around here will work with Newcomers.
You haven't been here very long, I assume...? I don't need to know anything too personal, but I'd like to know a bit about your past in your world. How you came to get involved with the law.
...By the way, I've been on trial myself twice... Um, falsely, obviously... so you don't need to hold anything like that back.

My father beat my mother frequently and the police were ineffective. They called my mother a whore and brushed it under the rug. She was beaten so badly one time that she was put into a home for life and I was sent into foster care which was another useless thing.
[It was easier to speak of these things as a different person.]
But luckily my foster father was a smart man. I started doing well in school and he showed me that if I paired up with the right people, I could make the law effective. He himself wanted to be a lawyer, but marrying and having children at a young age put his life plans on hold. [Now she was just bullshitting.]
So he lived vicariously through me and I entered law school.
no subject
...But that's certainly a reason.)
I... see.
I'm sorry to hear that, Ms. Nesser. Although I know that can't be really any consolation.
[He pauses another second, studying her.]
I'd like to ask you your opinion... In your mind, what is the purpose of the law?
[He slips his hand into his pocket, in the meantime, to check on his Magatama. If he talks to someone who's holding back a secret, he'll be able to tell. There wasn't much point in using it earlier -- it might even be rude -- but this isn't a personal question and it's one that's important to him.]
no subject
But, ah, the tricky question. She found her answer within her, what she thought the law was always supposed to do for people like her.]
Law is supposed to protect and bring integrity to society. If someone breaks the law, they jeopardize that integrity and put their peers in danger and must answer for what they've done.
no subject
Is it ever permissible for someone who's guilty of a crime to be let off the hook?
no subject
Yes, if the legal procedures weren't followed to a T.

As long as they are willing to face the ramifications of their actions, then they are allowed to follow their own code. There is a fine line between free will and being told what one can and cannot do.
no subject
How would you face potential threats and intimidation from people with a stake in cases? Are you prepared to deal with people who won't like Newcomers much-- and those who'll like Newcomers defending other Newcomers even less?
no subject
I'm used to people not liking me too much.
no subject
...Well, not good, but... That's useful. How so?
no subject
[She smirks.]
I guess you can add 'private investigator' to my resume.

no subject
Well, that's all good, Ms. Nesser. Do you have any questions for me?
no subject
She finally blinked, as if coming back from some daydream.]
Nothing comes to mind.
no subject
All right. I'll check through things and see what I can offer you in a few days, then.
no subject
It was a pleasure meeting you, Mr. Wright. And thank you for interviewing me.
no subject
Likewise, Ms. Nesser. Thank you for coming in. I'm always glad to see Newcomers interested in the law.
no subject
My pleasure.
[She turned on her heel and made her way out of the office.]
