[OPEN] She took the train through the city at dawn

Who: Anya Lehnsherr and YOU
When: Anytime from this week!
Where: All over! Fred's hotel, the mall, the Port library, the towers, or just exploring the different sectors of the city.
Summary: Anya is meeting people and getting to know her new home.
Warnings: None so far.

Old habits die hard. She still tries to make herself inconspicuous, still hunches herself into small and unremarkable shadows, still slips along the edges of crowds. She's quiet and subtle and she doesn't draw attention to herself. But the longer she stays in the city, the more open she becomes. However briefly, she has her own job and her own apartment, space for her and her alone. The rare times she's spoken to people on the network - they listened. She feels almost like she's floating when she walks; she catches herself beaming at strangers as she wanders through the Port's streets.

She pours over books in the library, or at her desk at work in Fred's hotel when the phones are quiet. She spends the occasional night in the mall, just wondering at all the things she could buy with money of her very own, even though she spends only very sparingly. And in the evenings after work, sometimes she puts on soft music, and dances and dances and dances around the small, private haven of her crummy, temporary apartment until she falls on her bed in exhaustion, and sleeps without dreams.

That was true. Wanda had been very open on the network. It had never occurred to her not to be. Perhaps that carelessness was the result of a stressed mind, but more likely it was simply because it was Wanda’s nature to be an open book.

“Listen to you. You sound just like my brother.” When she laughed, it was genuine. “I think Pietro would have liked you.”

This whole situation was absurd. All of it: The Exiles, Siren’s Port, and this almost-familiar girl. It hurt Wanda’s brain to think of it. And the more she argued with the girl, the stronger her headache became.

So, she made a split decision to compromise.

“Here’s the deal. I’ll go with you if you tell me why you cared enough to approach me like this. What does your Wanda mean to you?”

Now Wanda understands why this stranger wants to get her alone, why the urgent need for privacy.

Pietro would have doubted the girl, perhaps even laughed in her face while calling her a liar. But Wanda ... Wanda believes instantly. And it’s not their similar looks that convince her. She’s actually swayed by the vulnerability the girl can’t hide. The suffering that quietly accompanies the word “sister” seems to almost perfectly mirror Wanda’s anguish over her forced separation from Pietro.

It never occurs to her that this pain, while real and very raw, might spring from a different well.

And so, with her mind already racing, Wanda takes a step toward the exit, the skirt in her hand completely forgotten. When the alarms go off, she is momentarily shocked into stillness. But when the smirking saleslady storms up to her, snidely commenting about how she is going to personally hand both of them over to security, Wanda feels no shame, only anger.

It has been a long day, and she now has far more important things to worry about. With barely a thought, she sends a hex bolt into the security detectors, shorting them out. As the alarms die off, she throws the skirt at the sales clerk. It's not her proudest moment, but she really doesn't care. They’ll be long gone before security arrives.

“Come on.” Wanda reaches out her hand. “Show me the beach.”

She’s not afraid. This is a risk she is willing to take in order to find out the truth, because family is everything to Wanda. And if the teenager’s claims of sisterhood turn out to nothing more than a ruse, then she will find out just how dangerous it is to cross a witch.
