Picnic time!

Who: Kevin, Bruce, Mimsy and all the invitees
When: Sunday August 5th Noon - ?
Where: Kevin and Bruce's pad.
Summary: Kevin invited some people for a picnic/barbecue thing, hopefully they all stop by.
Warnings: Kevin's temper, possibly Crowley/Magneto, Miss Unohana smiling. Will add others as necessary.

Kevin has spent the last couple of days cooking, baking and cleaning the house with Mimsy and Bruce's help.

He's moved everything outside and will be manning the grill, and making sure that everything is nice and ready.

Some foods on offer:

Typical grill fare (burgers, dogs, sausages, chicken)
Corn on the cob (on the grill!)
Salads (macaroni, potato, three bean, regular lettuce salad, egg, tuna, and chicken)
Fresh vegetables with dip
Fried okra
Greens
Potatoes au gratin
Eggplant lasagna
Fried fish and hushpuppies
Pies/cobblers (blackberry, strawberry/rhubarb, apple cobbler w/streusel topping, blueberry, pecan pie)
Cakes/cupcakes (devil's food, carrot, vanilla)

All buns/breads are homemade, by Kevin as are all the desserts. There are two huge tables of food with paper plates. There are three coolers of drinks (one saved for alcoholic drinks brought by the guests). Mimsy is trolling for food, Kevin's wearing an inhibitor, and all are welcome!

Anyone who fights will be asked to leave and then removed. Kevin's in a mood, and just wants to have fun.

[Bruce turns away to get mayo out of the fridge, mostly to hide his expression from Kevin. It just adds depth to the misery of Kevin's loss of his father.]

I think they'd both be proud of you. [He gets his face under control and emerges with the mayo.] Did you have other friends and family like that?

Not 'till I got to the mansion. Um, the Xavier Institute, where mutants go t'learn. M'first team an' I weren't real close, thanks t'Foley, but after the Hellions tried t'break me outta jail, I switched teams an' we got real close.

Spent the summer at Keller's family's place in California.

[He snorts.]

We got inta trouble, but at least we had fun.

What kind of trouble?

[Kevin looks outside for a moment.]

Guy called the Kingmaker. Promised everythin', t'all o' us. Said he built nations an' crowned kings.

We were stupid. Signed the contracts. It was alrigh', fer a while. Til we found out 'bout this weapon he was sellin'. Biological, nasty. Then... we went back on the contracts. Stopped him, an' I destroyed the weapon.

[hulkbusted]

[Bruce notes that Kevin seems to have a pattern of picking bad bosses and files that away for future reference if he gets another job.]

I've been lied to like that. It's how I ended up this way. But you did what you could to make it right.

[That one wasn't wholly his fault :/ The others had gone along with it too! And really, imagine having his power, and being in jail. He took his first ticket out.]

Saved the world.

[A shrug. To him it isn't a big thing. The seniors had done it... he didn't know how many times.]

Weren't a big thing. Got on the plane t'go home, an' ended up here. I jus' hope the others are doin' alrigh'.

[It's a big thing. It doesn't have to result in a medal or a fan club or even a pat on the back, but as someone who's done a little bit of heroing, he thinks it should matter to the people doing it.]

I hope so too. It's good to have people to stand by you. [Thinking of the Avengers.]

Julian Keller was here fer a while, but he died and didn't come back. He's happier at home, anyway.

[Happier without having to worry about the team.]

Hellions broke me outta jail. New Mutants were jus' gonna leave me there. S'why I switched teams.

[hulkbusted]

The New Mutants and the Hellions. It sounds like roller derby names. [Holds up his hands to fend off any insulted response.] Not that the Avengers is that much better.

[Kevin snickers.]

Well, there was 'bout six o' us on each team. Hellions were Miss Frost's students back when she weren't well liked by the X-Men. They were... killed. The New Mutants were the third team in the mansion, I think.

[Kevin shrugs. Military squads is what they really were.]

These are kids, right? Why are kids out doing things that get them killed?

[Kevin shakes his head.]

We were on Summer break, Dr. Banner.

[Trouble finds them.]

Miss Frost's students were killed by someone who didn't like her much. I dunno the details. I never asked.

An' ya stop bein' a kid, the minute ya manifest.

Yeah, you said that before, but until manifesting mutant power comes with the maturation of all the hormonal flux of adolescence and the sudden influx of years of life experience, I'll stick with thinking of kids as kids.

[southernreaper]

Life experience? We all got that. Keller got kicked outta his house, Soo was almost murdered, Santo fell off a mountain, I killed my Daddy an' was put in jail fer it.

[He shrugs again. To him, it's just the way it is.]

There's a couple o' older mutants here on the island, that ya could ask, but that's the way it is. Life starts beatin' us, when we manifest.

I believe you. [And also remembers that there's no explaining the benefit of more years in which to contextualize those experiences. 17 is 17, mutant or not.]

I talked to Eli, remember? Let's forget about that. We aren't there, and you're throwing a party.

[Kevin snorts again.]

I trust Eli a lot, Dr. Banner, but he ain't exactly been around places like the school or even the US the last few years. He don't know how much worse it's gotten.

Kevin just lets it go.]

Ya seen the barbecue fork?

If it's disappeared, you might want to ask Deadpool. [A smirk.] No, it's out by the grill.

[Kevin paused for a moment, before shooting a look at Bruce.]

Ya know, if'n ya knew Deadpool better ya wouldn't say things like that.

[Because it's Deadpool.]

No one ever understands my sense of humor.

Except Deadpool. Why is that, I wonder?

I understand humor, but I've heard stories...

[And on that cryptic remark, he's going to go find his barbecue fork.]
