[ This afternoon, Gilbert had said "tonight." Break had initially protested the delay, though not so much for the sake of his health. He feared he might lose his nerve. But he has managed to convince himself, somehow, that this is all an information-gathering exercise.

How strong is Gilbert, really? How strong is Gilbert's Chain? It's vital information. Because Break has long suspected that one day Gilbert might stand before him not as his subordinate, but as his enemy.

So Break's attitude, this evening, is carefree and easy. He's content to wait until after dinner. He's even being magnanimous enough to let Gilbert go out and have a smoke, first. But after he returns, Break cracks his knuckles and remarks, in the most off-hand of tones: ]

[ Break would collapse, when Gilbert draws his hands away, were it not for the effects of the restriction field. It holds his body upright; but it can't keep him from coughing. Red blood spatters, down his chin and onto the marble ballroom floor. He had had some idea of opposing Gilbert, testing him, at the beginning of this exercise; but he realizes now that this is folly. His body is too broken, even to try. Even his mind is exhausted.

Mad Hatter is a chain with the potential to negate everything related to the Abyss. But he's too mad and too chaotic to effectively focus his destructive force on his own. Thus his strength - and his principal weakness - lies in his contractor's will. ]
