Ishida. [well, they were standing at the same crosswalk; it stands to reason they had similar purposes. So he assumes.]

So, apparently meisters still eat like normal people. [he'd noticed the grocery bags, he means. Funny, that remembering terms from the man's world - weapons, meisters, kishin - was so much easier for Uryuu than remembering the person's name.]

[He chuckles.]

We're just normal people with some interesting abilities.

What are you up to?

[sequincy]

Normal for this place, anyway. [he adjusts his glasses, looking ahead of him, carefully neutral.] Apartment hunting. It's important to tour these places in person; experience is far deeper than description.

[circumsutus]

[Now, the obvious question is why would someone who's been here for so long decide to look for an apartment?]

Moving is always stressful. What size place are you looking for?

[sequincy]

A one bedroom. Perhaps a two, if there's an affordable unit. I wouldn't object to an extra room for needlework.

How has your living situation worked out? Most newcomers tend to group, at least at first. It's more affordable.

[circumsutus]

I don't make a very good roommate. [Understatement of the century.]

So, have you finally saved up enough money to strike out on your own?

[sequincy]

You do have a lot of eccentricities. [a screw in the head and all. Plus a weird relationship with desk chairs. Uryuu would hardly be surprised if there were more.

He pauses to check his list again. He should only be two or three blocks away now. The subway would have been faster...

Ah.] No. ...I simply lost my roommate, and I don't need a space that echoes. [particularly when it echoes with memory.] I could always afford to live on my own.

[circumsutus]

[Oh, spinny desk chairs. They are Stein's true loves.]

It's fortunate that you were able to find a high paying job so quickly.

[sequincy]

[he glances over his shoulder] I've been here for two years.

[circumsutus]

But you could "always" afford to live on your own.

[sequincy]

[hnh. Shoulder hunch.] I found someone worth living with, for a while.

[uncomfortable. Too prying. So:] Do you work at the general hospital now? Or did you give yourself to the companies? Many do.

[circumsutus]

[And oh, he's making the poor boy uncomfortable. Such a pity.]

I work at the general hospital and the clinic. SERO contacted me briefly to do some research, but I haven't interacted much with them since. I have no intention of giving myself over to either of the companies.

[Stein aligned himself with one particular organization, one particular individual back home, and his loyalty is not his own to give away.]

I suspected they would. [satisfied, even a little smug.] They're predictable at every turn.

Have you found it rewarding?

[circumsutus]

It certainly hasn't been boring. [Which is to say "yes, incredibly".]

Because of the diversity of your patients? [turning a corner]

[circumsutus]

Unique patients with unique problems. Sadly, they still don't trust me enough for surgery.

[But work is still interesting.

And he's doing his own research on darkness monsters.]

It's probably because of your poor stitching.

[circumsutus]

[Stein taps a finger on his face, looking overly surprised.]

[A shrug.]

It's my preferred aesthetic.

[Meaning yes, the scars are as much tattoos as they are self-inflicted injuries.]

[sequincy]

[Uryuu frooooowns.] And your clothing. There are no clean lines. It's too fragmented. The thread is so obvious... [really, very displeased by this use of "aesthetic".]

It looks like poor handiwork, not decoration. You should take more pride.

[circumsutus]

It's completely intentional, I assure you. [His lab coat is all one material, decorated with black stitches. The turtleneck underneath was originally two different shirts, turned into one, with clear color contrasts. The stitching is less obvious on his black pants, but still there. Even his shoes include the stitches, black lines on white boots.

Fragmented patchwork is his preferred look.]

I know. That's what makes it disturbing. It's no wonder your superiors are still holding you back... [feeling awfully free with his judgements advice today.]

[circumsutus]

I'm perfectly able to make neat stitches. [He tugs on the shoulder of his coat for reference, where the thick visible stitches are on second glance just additions to the actual careful, measured stitches underneath.]

[sequincy]

[Uryuu pauses long enough to peer in and examine the needlework. Stein's right - these are much more orderly, tight and neat. ...Nothing to compare with his own, of course, by his own humble explanation, but:] They're passable.

Show them that work instead then. [shrugging, resuming his walk.]

[circumsutus]

They just don't trust me working on people. [Probably because of Stein's personal choice of brain surgery, lobotomy by massive screw jammed through his skull.

Someone who works with brains like that shouldn't be allowed to work with other organs.]

[sequincy]

[Uryuu blinks] I'm surprised they let you work with them at all then. Trust is essential in a medical profession. People have enough reason to mistrust the hospitals here to start with.
