Who: Mary Winchester and her visitors~
When: 10/22 - 10/24
Where: Skye Medical
Summary: After surviving getting eaten by a grue, Mary has three fun days in the hospital before it gets worse.
Warnings: Injury, language, Lisbeth, and Winchesters.

[The night she comes in, the 21st, is taken up by surgery, family, and much-needed rest, but the next morning she wakes up slightly loopy from the drugs and ready to... stare woozily at the day. She has nasty scrapes on her face that required stitches, a patchwork of hideous bruises, a cast on one wrist, and bandages all over her body, including around her head, with several different IVs and a couple of monitors hooked up to her at once. Overall she looks like a hot mess, but she's coping better than anyone would expect, and when she isn't using her powers to throw things at Lisbeth, her roommate, she's taking visitors.

Some time between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, though, her condition worsens from an unforeseen complication, and she falls unconscious.]

I said I would.

[He's watching the clouds, wondering if a storm is coming.]

It's only Friday.

[Not that he expects her to notice the passage of time. Not that it matters, not really. She'll be fine, in time, and he isn't going to rush the process.]

Where is this place?

[He could look, but for now chooses not to.]

[She leans back on her hands splayed behind her, working fingers and toes into the sand deeper and imagining that it's warm.]

The Gulf of Mexico. We found this little beach on our first drive down to Florida. It was so beautiful, but we couldn't stay. The town was so small, there were no jobs.

[She breathes in and it's almost salty sea air, or a vivid imagining of it.]

We used to come here all the time. All the beaches by the city were really crowded and opened up to sandbars or peninsulas, but here- it was just the gulf. There was almost never anyone here.

[They liked the privacy and utter isolation, and often abused it for nefarious marital purposes. She sighs, the memory coming back sharp and strong. Mary would offer context- why they were in Florida of all places - but she assumes Raphael knows. It was their escape after Mom and Dad, years of it.]

[He could warm the sand, give a life to the dream, if she asked. It didn't occur to him. Humans' dreams were lacking tactically to him.]

There's the rare piece of beach on the island, but it's different than this.

[He knows - they had kept watch.]

What did you see most out here?

[momchester]

Birds. Stray dogs.

[Details come to life as she names them, coming forward into the dream as they're needed. The creatures are patterned wrong and one of the dogs is blue, but it's all the same. Mary points to their right.]

There are rocks and tide pools half a mile that way. [She settles deeper into the sand.] Mostly we just saw each other.

[Mary glances over him with an amused little smile.]

You're pretty over-dressed for the beach.

Nothing in the water? Dolphins are common enough in the area.

[He turned to glance over to the tide pools and then back at Mary. No need to comment on them mostly seeing each other.]

It's what I always wear.

[Even the sand was clinging to his suit.]

[momchester]

Actually, we did see dolphins sometimes. We rented a boat a few times and went out far enough for them to play in the wake. We were really terrible at it- we didn't know anything about boats- but it was fun.

[She laughs fondly at the memory, but it fades to something a little sadder. Mary gives him a bemused look. Of course it's what he always wears. All angels are like that- one outfit, all the time, like cartoon characters. By the time she looks over, she's in shorts and a tank top perfect for the beach, but what she sees gives her pause.

Michael didn't dress so formal- but he wore the same thing every time she ever saw him, too. She thinks of Castiel's eternally screwed-up suit, of Rachel's suit, of Lucifer, who looked like everlasting laundry day.]

Are you going to keep coming back?

[Castiel, relevantly and oddly enough, is actually dressed differently than usual; he looks a bit like a Winchester, actually, in loose jeans, a few layers of shirts, and a jacket like he tended to wear while he'd been mortal. There's a good reason for it, namely that he'd just recovered a day or two ago from having his powers drained by a Darkness creature, and hadn't bothered to repair his usual clothing and change back yet. Besides, he's only expecting to encounter Mary, and in a dream no less, and she's seen him dressed like this before.

He's not expecting Raphael, though, as he folds his incorporeal wings closed and glances around the dreamscape, his senses picking up his brother's presence immediately. Castiel isn't close yet, up by the dunes instead of down on the beach, and that's for the best; he has no desire at all to interact with Raphael, and opens his wings immediately once again to see if he can make a getaway before he's noticed.

He's pretty sure he can't.]

Boating is enjoyable. Some of my more favored Heavens.

[He didn't bother explaining why. Though he did start to answer, until he felt Castiel's presence. His attention shifts, even as he answers Mary. Still, the wind in the dream shifts with his attention.]

I said I would watch over you.

Are you going to join us Castiel?

[momchester]

[Her attention shifts roughly when his does: from the odd-ball comment about Heaven (because, um, what?), his restlessness has her shifting, glancing in the direction of the wind for whatever has changed.

Then- oh. Crap. She looks around, somewhat startled, and wondering if she just accidentally a fratricide.]

Cas? [She can't see him, though.]

[ofthursday]

[Damnit. Castiel lets his cloaking drop, becoming visible to Mary in an instant, and she might even be able to catch a faint shimmery outline of his wings closing again. He lifts his head a little, steeling himself, and strides forward as though Raphael is a complete nonissue.

As it is, he ignores his brother's question entirely, all focus on Mary as if the archangel isn't even present, because if he acknowledges him Castiel is pretty sure he'll say something he shouldn't, and his temper is always what gets him into trouble with Raphael.

Besides the whole disobeying and starting wars thing, of course.]

Hello Mary. I wanted to see how you were faring.

[The disobeying and starting wars and trapping him in Holy Fire twice.

Raphael didn't bother to rise as Castiel walked over. He didn't need to. But he did watch Castiel, curious about the experience Castiel had had with the monster.]

[momchester]

[Mary looks from Cas to Raphael and back again, waiting for the other shoe to drop before, satisfied that they aren't starting a slap-fight yet, answering honestly.]

Thanks. I actually don't know how I am, I can't tell. I'm just really tired.

[Said with little recognition of what the implications are- that here, even in a dream, she is so tired, and keeping even this unconscious together is hard. She shrugs a shoulder. ]

[Castiel is still steadfastly ignoring Raphael, nodding with a small frown at Mary's words.]

You were attacked by the creature that is going after others, correct? The enormous Darkness being that resembled a dog?

[Raphael isn't content to be ignored, which is more of a problem.]

She's ill but she'll recover.

[Simply stated. But if Mary started having trouble holding the dream together, he would maintain it while they were there.]

We were, yes.

[momchester]

[The thing is, she thinks she'll probably recover, but she's not sure. Raphael is holding the dream together, but her mind doesn't want to dream at all- despite being asleep. Being here now, being in one piece and coherent and taking a shape, is exhausting even in her unconscious. Having a subconscious is exhausting. Part of her wants to let go.

This is rapidly getting uncomfortable. Mary wasn't afraid of Michael in the end, and had more respect than fear for Lucifer, so it's easy, so easy, to forget what they are. Not with Raphael, though. He's tall and forbidding and ten times harsher and colder than Michael was even in the beginning, and she can sense the tension in the air. Mary gives an uneasy look at Raphael, but continues to address Cas.]

Have you seen John or the boys? Do you know how they're doing?

[ofthursday]

[Castiel's gaze doesn't shift from Mary when Raphael speaks, at least not immediately. He seems to be restraining himself from saying what he wants to say, struggling with his temper and how Raphael's very presence inspires such hatred in him.

He continues to ignore the archangel for the moment, responding to Mary first.]

I haven't spoken to them.

[And finally, he looks at Raphael.]

Why haven't you healed her?

[This is all stupid, as far as Castiel is concerned. Raphael is an angel, and not just that, but the angel of healing. Why is Mary even in the hospital?]

[John and Jo were the only ones Raphael could easily watch. But hadn't been a priority over 'still alive'.]

Because she will heal without my intervention. And anything which wouldn't, I've taken care of.

[His voice is quiet, almost mild except far too authoritative to be called such.

Castiel don't we know better than to question Raphael?]

[Mary is sensible enough to smell trouble- but her protest (in whose favor? she doesn't even know) dies uncertainly on her lips.

Will she heal? She honestly doesn't know, and it shows. Besides, this conversation might end in someone healing her, so she stays out of it for now.]

[What Castiel wants to say first is 'that's idiotic' but he manages to hold his tongue. However, he doesn't back down at Raphael's tone, and doesn't bother to reign in his own either.]

Then stay out of my way, and I will do it.

[If Raphael doesn't want to actually act, fine. Castiel would take care of things.]

[Raphael knew Mary was going to heal, which is why he was content to be patient and wait.]

She's not your charge Castiel.

[momchester]

[Even as she watches Mary can feel the urge to- let the dream go- and the fact that keeping her mind together is hard, is scares her- as does the flaring jealousy from both of them. God, men and their urge to pee on everything they see. She sits up sharply, looking at Raphael.]

Excuse me? "Your"?

She is clearly not yours either, or you would be doing something, but instead you are treating humans as you always do; nothing but pawns in your end game, used when it's convenient, and falling upon the excuse of 'not intervening' when it isn't. If you cared about not intervening, you would have left this family alone years ago.

[Castiel rarely speaks so much at one time, but his hatred of Raphael and his hatred of what had been done to the Winchesters, to Heaven, to him, is always held back by just a thread. It doesn't take much to snap it.]

I am doing something. What I am not doing is acting as a fix all. Humans live such brief lives, brutal, painful ones yes, but brief - and we should not be healing ever minor injury. As I said -

[Oh yes, Raphael was angry but until now, the told had been that same quiet command he normally used. Obey or else. But the next sentence he spoke, the intonation was different. All angelic confidence, the kind with left no room to doubt it was Truth.]

She will heal this on her own - and what her body is not capable of healing, I have healed and will continue to do so.

[Bluntly, Mary wasn't in danger of dying, and Raphael knew that.]

You Castiel become so attached that you lose prospective.

[momchester]

[Okay, no. No. Mary scoots away from Raphael enough to face him properly, positioning herself closer to midway between the two angels.]

Okay, but. Comas can cause permanent brain damage.

I don't advocate following humans around and fixing all their issues as a whole.

[Castiel steps forward instead of back, chin up, projecting himself with the confidence and strength of someone who is an equal to the archangel, not a subordinate, because at home that's what he is. He didn't back down to Lucifer, and he won't back down to Raphael.]

However, helping one's friends is a different matter, though I shouldn't expect you to know such. Friendship requires too much attachment and is forbidden, after all.
