Halloween Masquerade Ball

Who: The Newcomer Political Party and The Newcomers!
When: October 27th, 7:00pm till Morning Sirens.
Where: The Newcomer Community Center
Summary: Time for some Halloween Masquerade Fun!
Warnings: Anything is possible!

The Community Center has been transformed into a sophisticated autumn dance hall, with bits of Halloween decorations around the room. When the door opens, you find yourself in the hall before the main room, someone ready to take your coat, if you have one, and another ready to give out bracelets. That way no one who shouldn't be drinking won't be able to.

The dance floor is surrounded by a number of small, round tables, each with an elaborate centerpiece of cobwebs. There are lights within the hanging decorations, with draped fabric over the sides, to give it a more close knit feeling. At the head of all the tables is a bar serving free drinks and cocktails to anyone over age. There is also a buffet

And then, of course, there is the dance floor, where people are dancing to the music supplied by two talented DJs, lights blinking and the room ready for everyone to have a good time.

[Tonight is a good opportunity than ever to get a feel for the social and political climate. Norman has only got a taste of things from his time observing the people around him from his daily commute to dealing with the bureaucracy at the SPPD. It is also a good chance to see the important figureheads running the whole show. There was only so much he could learn through skimming the NV's network.

The mask Norman is wearing is a simple design. Nothing too elaborate. A part of him feels a little silly for wearing the thing but at least he wasn't required to come in all decked out in some costume. Costume parties or just dressing-up as another persona was a thing of the past for him. Norman never did like being center of attention and it shows with the federal agent from another dimension being the resident wallflower. No sturdy surface is safe.

But there goes that trembling in his hands again. That unsure feeling begins to creep up again. Norman plays it off by rubbing his hands together with no expression to paint the uneasy feeling. Probably a good time than any to walk around and explore the halls of the community center for a bit. He walks away from the wall a little deeper into the crowd. Before he goes any further he decides to scan around for a direction to take but his mind accidentally makes him take a step backwards and bumps into someone unintentionally.]

[Maybe it was you, maybe it wasn't but if it is you well...Let's just hope you weren't carrying any food or drinks with you.]

[ The bad news is that Jake was holding a plate of food already half empty at this point. The good news is that most of the food stays on the plate and Jake manages to keep it in his hand.

He does have to juggle with the plate for a moment to get his grip back on it, and looks up to see who ran into him in the first place. His mask is currently pushed up so he can actually eat, so that face might look familiar and his stares bemused at Jayden, trying to remember why this guy looks vaguely familiar. ]

No harm done.

Ah-

[Nothing too bad at least. Jayden lost his footing there in the process but he recomposes himself, now facing where Jake is standing.

He looks down then up face-level once more to see if the guy isn't just being polite.]

Sorry, that was my fault. Should've looked behind me.

[Huh, this guy looks familiar.]

[ Jake takes a moment to look around and find a vaguely flat surface to prop the plate on top of for the time being so he can make sure the guy that ran into him is steady on his feet again. Looks like he's got things under control at least. ]

No problems here. Besides I can't blame anyone having trouble seeing at the moment.

[ He reaches up to tug at the mask on his head. ]

These things aren't exactly the best if you want to have use of your peripheral vision.

[Watching Jake tug at his mask makes Norman have the knee-jerk reaction to touch his own mask as a reminder that "Right. I still got this stupid thing on."]

I can't pin the blame on this thing. That was just me being careless.

[He folds his arms.]

I uh...I believe we've spoken before. Over on the network.

[ Jake drops his hand and goes back to staring thoughtfully at Jayden, already forgetting the fact that he almost lost his food recently. He's just glad he wasn't the only one to think he'd met this guy before. But the question was where... ]

I was just thinking that! Do you ever stop by Lion's Gate?

Heard of the place but I haven't actually been there. You probably got me mixed-up with some other person.

[Wrong guy maybe? No...Jayden is definitely sure he has talked to this guy before.]

[ Dammit all! And Jake was so sure he'd pinned this one down. He could have seen him on the streets sometime possibly? But he sees so many people and their faces disappear from his memory the moment he looks away unless something is exceedingly odd about them.

No, this man made some kind of impression, but... what was it? ]

Over the NVs maybe?

Yeah. That's it.

[Amazing what a few weeks can do to your memory. That doesn't stop Jayden from thinking this once over. Small details matter from a person's appearance, their speech pattern or certain subjects they bring up in conversations. In this case it's--]

You mentioned knowing a lot about monsters.

[There is a slight inflection in that statement. God, how the hell did he not catch his name?]

[ Jake grins, now he remembers the fellow! The new arrival that was getting something of a runaround from people when it came to explanations on the monsters around these parts. He's glad he finally got that all figured out. In fact, Jake's not even concerned about the failure of a name exchange. ]

And you're the new guy! I remember it all clear as day.

[There goes one mystery solved. The corners of Jayden's mouth pull a small smirk as he pushes the mask up from his face. The fact that he managed to keep his mask on for this long was a miracle in itself.]

You had me going there for a sec, I thought I had completely lost it.

[ One small mystery on an island shrouded in them, alas. But hey, at least being able to identify the people around them gave them one less thing to worry about, and considering Jake didn't recognize the vast majority of the people here it was nice to see a familiar face. Even if they'd only spoken once before. ]

A scarily easy thing to think in a place like this, but don't worry this time. You're all still there upstairs as far as I'm aware.

There's that, at least.

[He jokes but at this point, Jayden is counting the little things here in Siren's Port that help him keep his composure.]

Sorry but I don't think I caught your name back then.

[ No one can blame him, really. Most people don't go from one island overrun by monsters to another, and the transition can be pretty jarring.

Jake's more than happy to free up his hands first chance he gets though and offer his hand for a handshake. ]

Jake English. It's a pleasure to meet you.

[And Jayden is more than happy too reciprocate by giving Mr. English a firm handshake.]

Pleasure to meet you too, Jake.

[Boy, normally he would have to chase after teenagers his age just so he can ask a few questions regarding a case. Sure is an odd yet nice change in pace.]

Sorry, I don't mean to hold you up. You probably have other people to hang out with.

[ Jake can always appreciate a good handshake. You can judge a man's worth through his handshake! ... Okay, that's not actually true, but still. ]

What here? I wouldn't worry about that. They've all got their own business to attend to.

Ah-! [ Talk about a party foul! Ino manages to regain her footing without her drink spilling, holding her arm out to help her equilibrium.

She's not mad (a little annoyed, sure), and she turns to Norman and smiles. ] You should watch out! Some newcomers are really itching to fight.

I'm really sorry!

[Ino may be smiling about it at least but Norman is genuinely concerned.]

I didn't hurt you, did I?

I'm fine! I'm not as fragile as I appear.

Alright.

[Good to know at least. He dusts of his sleeves likes he's got something on them but it's more so a force of habit.]

I'll try to be a little more careful next time. I ah-wasn't expecting this many people to be here.

[Bullshit reason but it's better than saying being slightly light-headed for reasons that are not alcohol related.]

It's a party! [ She giggles. ] Of course people are going to show up. We don't get very many of these between the strange events.

Strange events?

[This city is odd in itself in between the Darkness and the political nonsense between the two competing corporations but there is probably something else he isn't aware of.]
