Halloween Masquerade Ball

Who: The Newcomer Political Party and The Newcomers!
When: October 27th, 7:00pm till Morning Sirens.
Where: The Newcomer Community Center
Summary: Time for some Halloween Masquerade Fun!
Warnings: Anything is possible!

The Community Center has been transformed into a sophisticated autumn dance hall, with bits of Halloween decorations around the room. When the door opens, you find yourself in the hall before the main room, someone ready to take your coat, if you have one, and another ready to give out bracelets. That way no one who shouldn't be drinking won't be able to.



The dance floor is surrounded by a number of small, round tables, each with an elaborate centerpiece of cobwebs. There are lights within the hanging decorations, with draped fabric over the sides, to give it a more close knit feeling. At the head of all the tables is a bar serving free drinks and cocktails to anyone over age. There is also a buffet



And then, of course, there is the dance floor, where people are dancing to the music supplied by two talented DJs, lights blinking and the room ready for everyone to have a good time.



Last call for food is two hours before sirens, and then the last call for drinks is an hour before the party finishes. You might want to be careful when it gets to be that time, though. Around 1:00 am, the party is going to change, due to a series of unfortunate events. You may not be very hungry or thirsty for awhile after.

[Oh the things he'd say to that. Especially while his hands, currently clawed work the tables.]

I'll have to discuss it with my com-padre in crime. But we do have a list of requests built up and a hey dudes what about slow dancing. How's it going by the way.

[It would not be a good conversation, I'm sure. She cocks her head.] Who's said com-padre? [She can have a talk with him (or her) too. Maybe it'll move things along faster. She just really likes Dean Martin, okay.

Scatty rests her hands on her hips and shrugs.] Not bad, just waiting for a fight to break out so I can actually do my job. [Can you tell how bored she is with the lack of violence at this shindig.]

[He points to his fellow dj before snagging up his water and letting the music ring out. He takes a swig since he can permit himself.]

Hahaha, yeah this has to be pretty boring. I mean the lack of fights not the music and the fun. [He smirks behind his mask again, the eyes of the mask lit with red light for a second.]

[symmachy]

[She locks eyes on the other music master and yes, she'll talk to him later.

Dave, this is why she likes you: you don't think her violent tendencies are weird. Rather, you probably don't know her well enough yet to be terrified of them.] Hopefully it'll pick up soon. Otherwise, my presence here seems unnecessary. [A short pause.] Cute mask.

[He's so used to trolls by now any violence is just another day. Whether he'd be scared or not, the jury is out on.] You never can be too careful.

[He's thinking of the recent troubles.]

[A pause.] Thanks. [The light dies, his red eyes are focused on the tables again as he takes a second to adjust a bit of the beat. It sounds smoother when he finishes.]

[Troll culture is probably something Scatty will come to appreciate once she learns more about it. That's sort of sad.

She hums along with the beat for a few seconds before:] Anubis wasn't that great of a guy, sadly.

[Neither was Noir. The part about justice is part of why he doned the costume. Because it was one eighty out from what he really is. He opens his hand.] Not glorifying this at all. I know a godlike figure who looks kinda like this.

And he's a dick. [And this reminds Dave of what he's fighting, what he HAS to fight. There's a lot of deeper meanings into what he chose and why.]

[Scathach is dressed as Poseidon because he's the least shitty of her uncles. There really isn't any deeper meaning, except maybe the irony of how much she hates water.]

Yeah, so is the one I know of. He was also a mama's boy. [Which is like, ten times worse than being a dick.]

Dunno if the guy I know is or not. He just stabs whoever he wants and ports around killing people. [And if he dressed as Noir he'd have hated himself. That and he's not that tasteless. But he can't keep the anger out of his tone when he talks about Noir.]

[She cocks an eyebrow.] He does sound like a dick. [Oh and is that the stale scent of rage she's caught? Why yes, yes it is. Good thing she snacked before coming here.] Is he in the Port?

Nope and you're all better off without him around. [He sets his bottle down and sets his hands right back on the tables to get back to work. He times it right, coming into control just as he's needed.]

[symmachy]

[She doesn't leave just yet, instead mulling over his words. This Noir obviously bothers Dave. She'll just have to keep her eyes and ears open for any news of him. She turns her eyes to the turntable and squints a little.] How do you do this? [A vague gesture at the controls. Technology, man.]

You mean work turn tables? [He gestures to the turn tables, adjusting the sounds and listening for any changes.] It's not too hard but it really helps if you have a good ear. Timing is everything, because if you don't learn when to time fading in, altering the sounds it sounds like shit.

It's all about knowing what does what which takes practice.

[symmachy]

[She's actually pretty good with music--singing and playing instruments, at least. This newfangled technology is beyond her.] You've had a lot, I assume?

Since I was a baby, yeah. [He motions for her to come closer, patting the dash.] Come here, I'll give you a crash course. See the whole purpose isn't to destroy or make the music something else in the case of a mix. You want to add new dimensions to it.

[symmachy]

[Oh now she's being put on the spot. Buck up Scatty, you can do this. She moves in, eyeing the turntable like it's some kind of mutated creature.]

That sounds a lot simpler than it is, I'm sure.

Sort of, it takes a good ear to pick out when there's discord. I like to think it comes with practice. [He holds out his hand sets his hand on a dial.] Part of djing for the public is making sure the music don't stop. This controls the volume of the next song. You can fade this in over the end of the last one.

[symmachy]

[She nods, actually paying attention. Music is something that's always interested her throughout the millennia.] Fading, got it. Seems like the best way to go.

It takes listening to the original pieces to find out how to improve them and make them mean something else. That's kinda the point, making something new from pieces of something else. [He adjusts the dials, smoothing out the sounds and adds a vibrant tone to it. It gives the present song a bouncy quality to it.]

[Instead of being a normal person and you know, maybe moving with the music, she stands perfectly still instead.] You've listened to all these songs before, then?

Yeah. Sometimes I listen to the same song for days on end to mix it. I practice constructing from scratch for hours. It's like anything else you have to practice it to get any good at it. My bro was uh, pretty much the best at it. [There's not a trace of doubt in his voice as he adjusts things a little more.]

[symmachy]

[At least he's okay with his sibling being better at something. Scathach has all sorts of issues with her sister. Granted, they're twins, so there's bound to be jealousy when one is stronger, prettier, or a better fighter (hint: Aoife is all of the above).] That's dedication.

Can't let myself get rusty. That would be just wrong. [No, instead he has issues with self confidence, thinking he can't measure up, and didn't know who he really was for the longest damn time. There's likely some resentment in there and a hell of a lot of stress. But a lot of these things don't matter when your brother is dead. Only to be dragged out and spit up when they come back from the dead as a rebooted teenage version of that guardian.]

[All of that sounds incredibly awful for a teen to have to go through. She's trying not to overtly sense anything he's feeling, but it's hard when she hasn't fed in a few weeks.]

Practice makes perfect, I guess.

Doesn't it with anything? [It's kinda nice being among people again. He missed crowds and flashing lights that had nothing to do with possible death. God damn did he miss holidays and not having to wait any more. No big green pimp on a rage trying to destroy the after life.] Anyway. A lot of this is about feeling out and adding to it, without distorting the original feel. You just update it, make it flow differently but not so much no one has a clue what it was.
