Halloween Masquerade Ball

Who: The Newcomer Political Party and The Newcomers!
When: October 27th, 7:00pm till Morning Sirens.
Where: The Newcomer Community Center
Summary: Time for some Halloween Masquerade Fun!
Warnings: Anything is possible!

The Community Center has been transformed into a sophisticated autumn dance hall, with bits of Halloween decorations around the room. When the door opens, you find yourself in the hall before the main room, someone ready to take your coat, if you have one, and another ready to give out bracelets. That way no one who shouldn't be drinking won't be able to.

The dance floor is surrounded by a number of small, round tables, each with an elaborate centerpiece of cobwebs. There are lights within the hanging decorations, with draped fabric over the sides, to give it a more close knit feeling. At the head of all the tables is a bar serving free drinks and cocktails to anyone over age. There is also a buffet

And then, of course, there is the dance floor, where people are dancing to the music supplied by two talented DJs, lights blinking and the room ready for everyone to have a good time.

[ No reason. No reason at all, not like this. A bit of sparring in the garden might answer his question easily enough, in a much less hazardous fashion. The next fine day, whenever it stops raining--

Then again, when was Hatter ever about reason? Break twirls his cane through his fingers. ]

Haaaaaaa~! Hahahahaha!

Look sharp, Mister Allen!

[Fine, then! HE'S WAIIIIITING.

Watching Break, eyes narrowed. What, are you going to hit him with a cane?]

[ ............

Well, yes! That was the idea. WHACK! ]

[His left arm moves up to block it, LIGHTNING FAST!!! It'll feel as though his cane's connected with some material much harder than, say. Human skin. Something almost metallic. Weird...!]

[ Well, that's... interesting. Some sort of armor? Or an ability...? He should have gotten a lot more touchy with Allen when he had the chance.

Maybe later. If there is a later. Hatter's growing influence is making him care less and less about little things like "later" and "tomorrow."

He lifts his cane again, making as if to hit Allen's left arm again. At the last moment, he shifts his aim, swinging around to attack Allen's right side. ]

[...Well, he hasn't sparred with anyone in a while. Might as well make the most of this.

He doesn't react quickly enough to block it this time. Oof...

But if there's one thing he's good at, it's taking hits. He flinches back, but without missing another beat, he's reaching out with his left hand to try and snatch that obnoxious cane.]

[ Well, well. No armor there. He'll concentrate his attacks on that side, and--

Just then, he feels Allen's hand close around the end of his cane. ]

Goodness me! How cheeky!

[ He thumbs open a catch just at the handle, and pulls out a sword. ]

I hadn't intended to escalate things so quickly, but if you insist~! ♥

[....SHHHHIT.

He jumps back with a curse under his breath, eyes bugging. WHY WAS THAT A SWORD ugh...

But he's hanging onto the cane-scabbard, because. It's something.]

You carry that around with you everywhere?

It's best to be prepaaaaaaaaared. You agree, right?

[ A little nod towards Allen's left arm. And then, with a swish of his sword--

EEEEEEERRRRRK!

--that is - was a flying Darkness Creature. It falls to the ground, in two pieces.) ]

Aiiiiyah~! Our little friends have found us. Let's end this quickly!

[ He darts forward, aiming for the right side of Allen's head - with the flat of the blade, not the edge. ]

[YELPING, as the poor monster's neatly severed.

But there's no time to worry about that. Clutching the sheath not unlike a baseball bat, Allen twists round and brings it up just in time to block the blade, an inch away from connecting with his face. Though he realizes belatedly that Break hadn't been using the sharp bit... how considerate of him.

Despite training with Kanda, Allen still kind of sucks at swordplay (probably because they could both only keep at it so long before it inevitably devolved into fisticuffs.) The only thing he can think to do now is push back on Break's sword, trying to knock it away-- and attempt to kick Break in the gut with his boot at the same time.]

[ The first time Allen landed a hit on Break, he wasn't Break. He was Gilbert: large, strong... and slow.

This time, he's himself, which is to say he is about as substantial as a porcelain doll, so there isn't much mass for Allen's foot to make contact with. His body simply rolls away from the kick, and then he just - isn't there anymore.

Until he is again, behind Allen, swinging (not stabbing or slashing - that's what Hatter wants to do, but Break is with difficulty keeping the more bloodthirsty aspects of his Chain at bay) the flat of his blade once more - towards Allen's... behind.

In the meantime, more "little friends" are approaching, making whoorfling, burbling noises as they ooze. ]

[Allen spins 'round just as Break smacks his... butt...

Seriously, man?

He doesn't actually have time to be indignant, though-- the approaching creatures of the night seem like a more pressing matter than the madman whacking his buttocks with a sword.]

There's more of them here!

[He hadn't wanted to activate his weapon for this fight (not against a normal human, not even an armed one), but he hasn't got much of a choice now. With a flash and what sounds like a bizarre, ethereal screech of metal, his transforms his left hand into a claw and runs as the things in the shadows. Just give him a second, Break...]

[ One persistent truth about the Darkness: it seeks your weaknesses. Between Break's sharp blade and his preternatural senses, he can slice through almost anything that approaches.

Almost anything.

He has read Darwin's Bestiary, he knows what forms the Darkness creatures take; but knowledge and experience are two different things. Rapidly oozing towards him is a bone stripper. He's unaware of it, because right now he's distracted, trying to make out what that eldritch, metallic screech was...

He stands, with his sword at the ready, as a monster that can't be cut approaches. ]

[Fortunately, when Allen glances back to see why Break isn't moving (as he clearly should), he catches sight of the thing. Rather hard to miss it.

And as is his wont, Allen rushes at it without a moment's hesitation, pulling off his left arm this time to form it into an oversized blade, accompanied by another, equally unidentifiable sound. At the same time, he helpfully yells at Break to WATCH OUT.

And then he's attempting to cleave the uncuttable blob in half, bringing his sword down heavily at its middle.]

[ Watch out? For what? Break whirls around, facing the spot where Allen has just rushed to. He heard no footsteps, no beating of wings. And there - the unmistakable snick of a blade swinging through air (So Allen is armed, though he'd declined to use the weapon on Break, apparently. Irritating little hero...).

But then - no thud of a body receiving a hit, no sound that he can identify, and many that he cannot. ]

What is - that?

[ He's risking exposing his weakness, but there's no helping it, now. ]

[ALLEN TRIES AGAIN, sword hitting the ground with a resounding clang, but the blob just seems to gather itself together again.]

I don't know!

[And don't worry Break, he's already suspected (the way he'd startled when he'd shattered some plates earlier was definitely a tip.) Not that he would care. One of his comrades back home can't see a thing and it's hardly proven a weakness.

Right now, his only concern is killing this thing. And making sure no one gets eaten. The bones in the blob are a bit worrisome...]

It's-- like jelly.

[Horrifying hellish jelly. HE SWINGS HIS SWORD AT IT AGAIN.]

[ --Jelly? Is this a monster to be spread upon crumpets and eaten with afternoon tea?

Clang! Clang!

He can hear the unmistakable sound of a swing and a miss. Allen's a terrible swordsman, that much is clear; but honestly what is that squelching, burbling sound, and--?

Despite what he would insist to the contrary, Break's blindness is a weakness in a situation like this, where he's got no experience to inform his senses, so it takes him a bit longer to put two and two together... ]

Ha! Ha! Ha! Mister Allen~!

[ Darwin had been pretty clear in his advice concerning what to do if one encounters an Ooze Monster: ]

Well, this is boring, isn't it? How about some more candy, perhaps some punch? Lets go back inside! ♥

[ RUN AWAY ]

[IF YOU HIT THINGS HARD ENOUGH, THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO DIE.

Retreating hadn't even occurred to him, he's too busy wondering if he should try exploding the thing, maybe...

He looks up when Break speaks, though.

Called it off, has he? That's a welcome change of tack, and Allen moves closer to him, to ensure that Break can at least return inside safely. Priorities! The oozing creature is still undulating towards them, though not at any sort of unreasonable pace. They should be fine...!

So long as they,] Move quickly.

[ OH GOOD.

For a moment, he was concerned that Allen might take it into his head to keep fighting this unwinnable battle (even though it had mostly been his idea, never mind!).

He senses Allen moving towards him, at which point he decides to take the opportunity to latch on to him, and make sure he doesn't decide to do anything stupid or heroic. Yes good, he'll just grab onto Allen's left arm... ]

[ ... ]

You--

[ Blind or no, he is 100% certain Allen had two arms when they started. ]

When did that happen?

[ ..........he'd pegged Allen for a stupid hero, but never had he imagined - THIS!!! ]

If you've been hurt that badly, you ought to say something!

[Hurt... badly...?

Allen's eyes widen and his gaze snaps down to his torso, hastily checking himself over, wondering if he'd somehow been horribly wounded and hadn't even noticed, until he realizes that Break had...

grabbed his empty sleeve.

Oh. Oh, right, if Break can't--] It's fine! I'm not hurt!

[He'd pull Break back now, since they have a monster to be avoiding and all, but his hand's occupied at the moment. So he settles for urging him on before Break can say anything else.] Keep moving!

[ Break isn't the sort of person who stands about arguing when an OOZE MONSTER is bearing down upon him. So he allows himself to be urged on, back towards the Community Center, but still--!!! ]

How d'you not call that hurt? What are you trying to prove, you--

[ Er.

Hadn't he himself been the one to call Allen out? Asked him to demonstrate his strength? Mocked him? Teased him? And then they'd gone out into the Darkness, into a situation with risks Break had not carefully calculated and studied...

Hatter had been egging him on, he'd been more than a little mad when he'd suggested it, but... that's no excuse. You can't blame another person for your own actions, you have to take responsibility for your decisions, this is something Break believes fervently.

He is sick with guilt. ]

Ah - shut up! Get inside!

[INSIDE THEY GO. They hadn't ventured too far from the door, fortunately, so it doesn't take long.

Allen will ensure that Break's safely inside first, though. Because he does consider it, staying back to finish off the monster-- but only for a split second; he hurries inside instead and slams the door behind them. Break's upset, and he can't very well let him continue thinking that he's been terribly wounded. Or that Break's in any way responsible.

Once indoors, Allen deactivates his sword, which rearranges itself back into an arm, refilling his sleeve and snapping neatly back into his shoulder. Somehow, he's still even got his glove on.]

...My arm's back now.

[HA HA everything is normal.]

[ Now that they're inside, the adrenaline is going to wear off, and Allen won't be able to hide what must be an agonizing injury. He'll try to bandage it up as well as he can, perhaps call Gilbert to come and take Allen to the hospital, he can use Raven, except -- what is he going to to say to Gilbert, how can he possibly explain how terribly and pointlessly this went wrong?

Well, there's no help for that, he'll just have to--

... ]

What--?

[ Pardon him for not believing you straight away, Allen. He's going to be feeling up your arm, from gloved hand to shoulder joint! ]
