This damn' door sticks / It sticks no matter what the hell I do
Who: Jade Harley & Kanaya Maryam
When: Today
Where: Their shared apartment
Summary: Two girls who don't know how to use a microwave are perplexed by a device without an irradiation option.
Warnings: Technological disasters.
The problem with the microwave was that it was unusable.
It did not come with directions. It came with a lot of buttons, which specified a very small and limited arrangement of potential foods they could prepare. Kanaya was not specifically sure what a potato was, or whether or not that was a stable of the human diet, but SHE certainly didn't need one. There was no irradiation option, which was preposterous- how were they to prepare their meat properly?
Kanaya just kept poking the buttons. But no matter what she did, the fact remained- the food was still cold, and nothing was getting cooked.
"What the hell is wrong with this device?"

"What the hell is wrong with this device?"

She doesn't so much say it as huff the word exasperatedly, hands on her hips as she stares down this electrical device. It was more than a little ridiculous - she'd asked at a bunch of stores for a nice cookalizer or refrigifyificator or even a portable refrigerator, and all she'd gotten was puzzled looks and items that were way too big and all wrong! Refrigerators are supposed to be small and easy to carry around, duh, and what kind of a weird one doesn't even have a rotary dial? She supposes that is the alternate universe future for you. This is still disappointing though because she'd been looking forward to seeing what kind of stuff would get invented three years ahead - maybe some super sweet upgrades to what she's used to - but instead there's just all this weird stuff. And don't even get her started on the stairs and elevators. What if she had Bec here with her? Her poor dog would go hungry, and all because she can't even find a decent irradiating cookalizer.

And she had no technical expertise to fix it. Perhaps they'd been cheated and there was a better version of it somewhere- and yet all the stores in which she'd inquired about improved versions of this cookalizer had given her blank looks or accused her of joking with thme.
"I can see two options." She prodded one more button, trying to make the beeping stop. "One being that it is broken or missing parts it was intended to have. The latter seems unlikely given what we have discovered, the former still possible. The second is that it is just significantly crappier than is acceptable by design and we should rebuild it."
After a significant pause.
"Er. You should. I don't think that I could. Or we should ask Equius if he would be amenable to improving it for us."

Apparently, people in alternate future Canada use these microwaves and the other weird devices that this kitchen had come with. Which is sad, because wow how do they get by? She really didn't appreciate all the cool and useful electronics she had until they were gone.
She gave the microwave a hard look, taking in the buttons and parts that hid the wiring powering the thing. Well. There was no harm in trying to fix it, right? Like Kanaya had said, they could always ask Equius for help if they needed it, and he'd said that he did the best work in all of Alternia. She didn't know precisely what that really meant, but it was impressive-sounding just the same.
"I'll try to fix it! It has to be better than just trying to use this."

"Are you sure you wouldn't rather have someone else do it?" What sort of technological skills did Jade have? Would there be an explosion?
...well, with Equius, there would probably be an explosion anyway, so.

She presses a button randomly - not causing anything but a beep - which probably totally strengthens her case that she knows what she's doing.
"I used to tinker with machines all the time at home, before the world ended and everything."

"You were a mechanist?" Huh. Wouldn't have guessed it. "No, tinker. Why did you tinker?"
