[He frowns, expression darkening at the sight of her. She looks even worse than she had before on that video, or perhaps she just looks worse in person because the screen on the NV wasn't clear enough. That or she looks the same and his fever has simply made him forget. But either way, he can see her now, and he instantly panics. She was supposed to be feeling better here, not getting worse.

Sniffling, he steps over and places a hand on her forehead, wordlessly.]

[motioned]

[She watches as he comes, turning her head slightly to cough heavily, fighting for a second to inhale afterwards. But she swallows, after a moment, and speaks.]

I'll be okay. [It's mostly from the exhaustion, but even that statement lacks conviction.]

[retraced]

[The hand drops from her forehead to her cheek, his expression still just as grim.]

Doctor? [He mouths again, hoping she'll understand what he's asking without having to write it.]

[motioned]

[She shakes her head feebly, trying to make the effort to raise a hand to meet his.]

[retraced]

[He takes her hand, and with the other pulls his paper and pen from an inner jacket pocket. It's a good thing that he's ambidextrous. Scribbled in his silly Victorian cursive:]

How long as it been since the doctor was in here?

[motioned]

[She looks at the paper thoughtfully, trying to recall the answer, but her mind is too clouded and she shakes her head again.]

Don't know.

[retraced]

[He turns to glance back towards the door. The idea of walking back into that hallway now that he's in here doesn't sound like his idea of fun, but he really should speak to her doctor. Or...write to her doctor. Oh, this will be fun.

He turns and holds up a finger to indicated that he needs to leave for a second.]

[motioned]

[She shakes her head again, holding tighter to his hand.]

It's okay.

[retraced]

I'll be right back.

[The words come out nearly silent again.]

[motioned]

I'm okay.

[retraced]

[He shakes his head and stifles a strained, painful sounding coughing fit, swaying a bit on his feet.]

[motioned]

[She looks towards him, full of concern, then brings the hand that was placed on his down to her chest to quell a quick moment of breathlessness.]

Really— [Before she begins to cough heavily again.]

[He winces and sits on the edge of her bed, just to keep from falling to the ground, mostly. He's already passed out on the way to the cab and in the cab today. Picking up the pen again, he writes:]

Do you want some water?

[motioned]

[She shakes her head, trying to smile again.]

No thanks.

[retraced]

[He blinks, thinks about it a second, and then writes just beneath it:]

Sorry. My handwriting is worse than normal.

[Because that's...something that needs to be apologized for, apparently.]

[motioned]

[She shakes her head again.]

I can read it.

[retraced]

Some people at the bakery can't read cursive.

[Just an observation that he's made lately.]

[motioned]

Really? That's weird.

[She stifles another cough, wincing.]

[retraced]

[He nods and drops the pen, reaches up to pat her shoulder.]

[motioned]

[She looks down towards the sheet, drawing her legs to her chest even though the pain that causes makes her shut her eyes for a moment.]

Think they'll find good medicine soon?

[retraced]

[He has no idea, but with all the talk of research, and the fact that he doesn't want to worry her any further, he nods and writes:]

They're working on it.

[motioned]

[She nods, then takes the pen. Easier than talking.]

mhmm youll be okay soon dont worry

[retraced]

[He tilts his head curiously as he takes the pen back from her and flips to the next page.]

Does your throat hurt worse?

[motioned]

[She takes the pen again, pausing before writing just a small amount below his question:]

not wors it just hrts a litle

[retraced]

[He still doesn't look completely happy with that, but takes the pen back anyway.]
