What ha-
[His voice comes out in a dry rasp, the back of his throat feels like sandpaper. He tries again after swallowing, not that it makes a great deal of difference.]
What happened?

[She moves to pour him a cup of water.] You collapsed at your workplace. Your co-workers brought you in.
[She approaches his bedside with the cup.] Water? [Whether he will be able to keep it down, she doesn't know. But he can at least wet his throat with it.]

[He checks himself and his language before he's able to finish the expletive. Something about Unohana Retsu always puts him in a mind to be on his best behaviour.
He pushes himself up on his elbows to manoeuvre himself into a sitting position, pausing slightly from a sudden rush of vertigo and nausea. His head throbbing, and he takes a moment to lean forward and get his breath and his bearings back. When he speaks again, his voice is still raspy.]
Yeah, please.

[She holds the cup for him so that he doesn't have to lift his arms.] I'd rather been expecting you here, over the past few days.

I'm fine. I just fell. I'll be out in a couple of hours tops.
[It's wishful thinking and foolish machismo besides; he doesn't want to admit that he's as sick as he is to anybody, no matter how foolhardy it might be trying to bluff it out in front of Unohana-san. Even so, the energy that he expended to sit up has left him feeling as weak as a kitten. It's pathetic.]

[Honestly, not even the greenest intern would have fallen for that, and she is by far the eldest working at this hospital.]
You have a fever of one-hundred-two, are dehydrated, and prone to severe dizzy spells. You will be going nowhere until these problems are corrected. [Which will take more than a couple hours, kiddo.] Please lie back down.
[Said in that tone that indicates that it's not as much of a request as the wording implies.]

I didn't know my fever was that high. I figured it'd go down on its own. Guess it's the sickness that's going around, huh.
[He hadn't wanted to believe he'd caught it; he was never sick, he figured if he kept treating it as a cold then he'd be fine. It had been weird trying to deal with his symptoms without Yuzu fussing over him or his old man tossing medicine in his direction with a surprising lack of his usual dramatics.]
How long am I gonna be stuck here for?
no subject
Mm. I'm afraid this virus isn't as simple as merely waiting it out. Something that can have fatal consequences. [There's a sadness in her voice to go along with the admonishment. Guess who had waited too long to seek proper treatment.]
Until your fever can be brought down and remain so, it would be unwise to release you. How long that will take, I cannot say.

I heard about Byakuya. I didn't know what to say.
[It was a shock. Byakuya was strong, Ichigo's had first hand experience with that knowledge, and to find out that something like an illness had managed to kill him was a pretty frightening though. It's enough to quiet his protests to being stuck here.]
Damn this places is a pain in the ass.

Saying something was not required; it was merely a necessary notification.
[But that last statement brings something of a genuine upward quirk to her lips. Ah, young people. So succinct.] One thing after another, quite often. Though not usually quite so deadly.
