Summary: It's a Block Party!

The block outside the Newcomer Community Center had been bustling ever since the block party had been announced little less then a week ago. There had been much to get done, and there was little time to waste. With the cure being distributed, the NPP's stance on everything was very clear: they would find some way to put a smile back on the peoples faces. There were stalls set up next to each other, one or two each for a different company, business, or an individual who set out to be enterprising and had wares to show. Many booths were selling different foods or drinks, while others had games for people to play. Some stalls were handing out fliers, trying to promote their business. Each stall had a sign hanging from if that proclaimed what they were, and what they were selling. There was a large stage in front of the center that was for entertainment; they had all kinds of shows for the people to watch and listen to as they milled about.

Most games didn't cost much, or they were free, as long as the person understood that a small donation would be appreciated. All proceeds from the block party were going to help those who had been affected the worst by this plague; some were still in the hospital with crippling medical bills, and the NPP was determined to help those less fortunate. Security was milling about, just as a standard precaution against stealing, or some kind of protest, and each protester was given something to eat, drink, and an invitation to join in the festivities.

The block party would be happening from Thursday, June 7th, to Sunday, June 10th. It would open at 11:00 am, and close around 5:00 pm. This was to ensure that everyone has plenty of time to get their stall up and more then enough time to take the stall down before sirens. Nothing would be left outside in the darkness, but also give enough time to let people have fun. Especially those who wanted to dunk the NPP members in a big tub of water.

OOC: Everyone can make their own thread! If you are a company or a person who has rented a stall, you can make your own thread, and it will be linked on the main post. Entertainment will be taking place throughout the day, and anyone who signed up can make their own thread or comment around. All games can make their own thread as well. Alcohol is allowed for anyone of the legal drinking age (which is 17, for those unaware!), and security will make sure nothing gets out of hand. There will be protesters on the edge of the block on Friday, but there will be no violence tolerated.

All threads will be linked on the main post for easier navigation. This post will serve for the entirety of the block party, which is from Thursday to Sunday. If you want, you can put the date in the subject line, otherwise it is up to you and your threadmates to decide when things take place. All stalls are set up for everyday of the block party. Don't forget to tag yourself in.

[Fenris pulls a lucky move - amateur, but better than how he's been doing so far.]

You think so? I've never thought of it that way. It just seemed like something to do.

[Iroh counters with a better one though.]

Yes, you can relate strategy games to real life applications, at least in the basic theory of it.

[He keeps that particular move in mind for the future.]

And what have you applied it to, I wonder?

[Iroh smiles]

Business mostly these days.

[He could apply some of the tenets to a battlefield too, though he had grown tired of battlefields as he got older]

Business?

[Fenris eyes the board for a moment, trying to see how it could apply to a merchant.]

Perhaps to expand your reach? Draw in more customers?

A man will have his secrets.

[He makes a calm move on the board]

How very wily of you.

[Fenris counters, the tiniest bit more confident, now.]

And when does this game end?

[Iroh chuckles]

I have been called such before.

[Iroh continues pressing onwards, he would make it close, but hoped it would reveal how some strategies worked]

When one side has the majority of the territory.

[He makes a thoughtful noise, makes a thoughtful move.]

There are worse things to be called.

[It was a usual sort of move, Iroh counters it well enough. He'd win out in a few turns]

That is very true.

[Fenris senses his imminent loss, but he continues on anyway, patient. Another move. Hey, at least he's not going about completely blindly, now, with a clear sense of the rules now in his head.]

[Iroh is pleased that the young man is showing marked improvement in his game, and continues finishing up the game]

[He looks at the board critically before sitting back, trying to catch the other's eye. There's a small smile on his lips - rare, but he did enjoy this little game.]

I yield.

[Iroh inclined his head]

I accept. Did you enjoy the game?

I did.

[A nod.]

It is unlike anything in Thedas, but I can see the appeal.

I am glad you enjoyed yourself. How have you been settling in Sirens Port?

It is...vastly different from what I'm used to.

[He hunches over now that he's not so focused on a task.]

And to be surrounded by so many people with-- special abilities. It is unsettling.

For most it is.

[He considers the second statement for a moment]

People with special abilities worry you?

Magic is always a cause for concern.

[He frowns.]

A sword is only as deadly as its wielder.

Even more so when the sword cannot be put down, when its power overwhelms those who hold it.

That has not been my experience. People with great power can control it, if they have the will to. Besides, powers work differently here for each person. You will likely receive some sort of power as well.

[The look on his face says that he would rather die.]

If everyone had such remarkable control, then yes, there would be no need for concern. But for every mage who possess that will, there are a dozen more who do not.

I have noticed nothing different in myself. [His markings and the unnatural power they give him must have been enough of an 'ability.']

An ability is not necessarily magic. Within my world, there are those who manipulate seperately the elements of air, water, earth, and fire. It is not magic, some people are simply born able to do so. There are those who abuse their abilities, and those who seek to use them for the highest good, and many in between.

[He takes a sip of tea]

If you spend your time looking for weeds you will miss out on the flowers.

Magic, abilities - what difference is there when they may both be used for destruction?

[He ponders over the old man's words, though. He is certainly wise, there is no doubt about that.]

I find it is more effective to prevent such weeds from having the option to grow in the first place. Then one need not become distracted by them.
